The Federal Trade Commission said they’ve shut down a web scam that convinced 27,000 people to buy domain names they didn’t need. The company would send emails to people who owned a dot com, and tell them that someone else had just registered the .net or .org version, but they could “stop” it for $70. In other words, they were tricking people into registering the .net and .org version through them.
