Speech and Your PDA
from the interesting-combinations dept
Palm and Speechworks made a deal today to bring speech recognition to your palm device. It’s not exactly what you might think. The idea is that you’ll be able to access the info in your PDA via a phone. Okay, does this strike anyone else as somewhat silly deal for Palm? It makes a lot of sense for Speechworks, as it gets them some more publicity. However, isn’t the whole point of the Palm device that you take it with you. In what situations are you going to not have it with you and have to call a number to check the data? What does that have to do with the palm device anyways? I guess it’s a first step towards real speech recognition on a palm device. Anyway, this article also gives me a chance to post the latest (joke) story about IBM’s “latest voice recognition brake threw”.

Well, you'd hope...
that Palm is actually planning for a future where PDAs and cell phones are a single device that can hotsynch by a phone call with voice activation/recognition. If not, then Palm is getting stupid….
