Differences in Men and Women Online

from the practicality-vs.-frivolity dept

A new study shows that men and women use the web in different ways. Women tend to be more practical, using the web to get information or perform a specific task, while men are more interested in the entertainment part. This strikes me as a bit odd. Here’s another article about the same study that goes into some attempts to create content focused for women surfers.

Men and women using the Web

I would have to agree that the sexes use the web much differently. My wife hunts up and passes on to me many concrete locations or finds the answer to questions we have about health, houses, etc.

I seem to spend my time checking out sites such as UBUBU.com, gamespot, netsurfer, etc. Nothing concrete just fun and interesting facts or games. If I look at her favorite places compared to mine it certainly shows a different mind set. In fact, there is something that would make a good article. Favorite places-> men and women.

what I find really interesting is that the behavior seems to be the reverse of what happens in the real world — the study says that online, women are efficient and time-pressed, and men wander around.. in the real world, men tend to be efficient, task-driven shoppers, whereas women are more prone to browsing and wandering.. interesting.

the hardware store effect...

I’m not so sure the “behavior reversal” is such an oddity. What happens when men go to hardware stores? Men linger over all the cool gadgets and stuff. What do women do? Get a hammer and go, unless they get caught in a paint-color quandary. I think it’s all a matter of interest. Men like toys and gagdets. Women don’t. (I know, sweeping generality…) But even though you can buy clothes online, it’s not the same as “shopping” for clothing. I’m sure if tracked a coupon-collecting site you’d find no evidence of “behavior reversal.”
