RealNetworks Turns to the Cable Model

from the why-do-i-have-to-pay-for-what-is-free dept

RealNetworks is starting a premium subscription service for the 2 million owners of the RealPlayer Plus software. For $9.95 a month they get premium content. Now, I would bet money that I can also track down that “premium” content on my own for free. It may be more convenient to get it sent directly to my application, but I would think they would have better luck selling this to the millions of people who have their free player and are looking for content, rather than the sophisticated user of their pay player.
