Round 1 for Transmeta

from the porter's-five-forces dept

The battle between Transmeta and Intel has officially begun with the unveiling of Transmeta’s chips in new slim lined and longer lasting portable PC’s. Intel’s current push towards the low power end of the market isn’t that impressive but they could still undercut Transmeta on price, if they start feeling a little hot under the collar. I’m a little surprised that AMD haven’t yet joined the low power party but I guess we should see them in this space soon. The real advantages of these chips will be their OS flexibility and easy chip upgrades (just download a new program onto the chip), these are Transmeta’s strongest barriers to entry.
