Using SciFi for Space Research

Apparently the European Space Agency is looking to science fiction novels for ideas in their research. It’s an interesting idea, but it seems a little backwards. Shouldn’t they be figuring out what would be useful, and then look for solutions? Instead, they’re looking for cool ideas, and then figuring out what to do with it. It’s a lot like the way most dot coms were founded, and look what’s happened to them.
