CMGI-AltaVista Deal Official

from the finally dept

Well, it’s about time. After rumors and chitchat for the past week about this, CMGI has finally completed the deal to buy AltaVista from Compaq. It appears stockholders like the deal for both sides (and they probably should). CMGI will almost definitely run AltaVista better than Compaq, and now CMGI no longer has to look to Federal regulators as if they’re just a VC firm, which would hurt them. However, it does bring up some questions about Compaq’s web strategy, though, they did just announce a deal with PCOrder.com. It’s a start, but I doubt it makes that big a difference.
