Hide Techdirt is off for the holiday! We'll be back with our regular posts this weekend.

Maybe they get it…

from the Maybe-they-don't dept

WebTV is changing their technology lineup — yesterday they were dropping hard drives for web surfing; today they are adding hard drives for television recording (taking Tivo & Replay head-on). The WebTV “classic” still has a niche market (my granny, Mike’s grannies), but it faces stiff competition from “free pc” cos like Gobi, Enchilada, DirectWeb, etc. Now WebTV pins their hopes on selling a Tivo box with web access? Time to get the service model/ technology model straight, guys. My $0.02: give WebTV classic boxes away (w/$20/mo access) to saturate the granny market (should have done this looong ago!); Sell the new TV recorders outright with free web access since the target market has PCs and a primary ISP that WebTV can’t displace. Got it, Microsoft?
