  Arkansas, Maryland, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas still have state constitutions that ban atheists from public office, and Pennsylvania denies atheists special protections it gives to theists. That's just governmental discrimination; cultural discrimination is much more widespread.

  It occurs to me... that's there's pretty much no incentive not to lie in situations like this. You tell the truth, you're screwed, sued, and at least out of a job if not going to jail if things were severe enough; no mercy. At least by sticking with a story, people believe they'd have a chance of avoiding punishment.

  I think one reason for overreactions like these is the overly-litigious way that society has gotten. The schools are afraid that if they don't do EVERYTHING in their power to keep children safe and something happens, parents are going to sue the shit out of the school.
  
  The irony, is of course, that those methods result in lawsuits anyways. Lose-lose, really, and everyone is to blame.

  While there has been an extreme amount of inappropriate punishment in these situations, these things should not be done without punishment.
  
  Should not be done at all, in fact. There's no good reason to try to make excuses as to why they don't deserve punishment. Fight the sentence, not the sentencing.
