  • Digital Britain Minister Insists No One Is Creative If They Don't Earn Money

I completely agree. It is nice to be paid for my talents, but along with that money comes chains. It is all about fulfilling requirements X, Y, and Z.

I'd be fairly surprised if you could come up with a coherent storyline for this. :P

    Wow

My buddy and I must be clinically insane. We are working on a computer game without pay or even promise of pay. We both love to program, and we love game design. Sure, we will try to monetize it at its completion, but we fully expect the possibility of scoring zero profits. It truly is just a labor of love.

    Re: Re: HUH???

But that's how economics works. I don't care if you can convince me that it cost $99 to transfer the milk from the cow to the carton. I appraise the value of milk cartons myself and decide whether I really want/need milk in my home. If prices push too high, I just stop buying, and you're left holding the bill. The problem is that these authors want this to be seen as some horrible crime. I do unpaid hard work all the time. It's a shame that authors were raised to charge out into the world and demand payment for EVERYTHING they do.

    Also...

It also disturbs me that so-called artists have determined that the value of art is expressed solely through the amount of money it rakes in. According to them, a song that is heard by a million people is less valuable than a song sold to one person for $1.

I have nothing against this author wanting to be paid for his work. Hard work deserves to be rewarded, but if artists had their way, we would all pay an art tax that is distributed to artists everywhere. In other words, we would pay for art we never even went out an enjoyed. That is the attitude these artists take.

If you want to make more money, lower your prices, and score extra revenue in the added volume. Stop crying about how much individual copies sell for!

    HUH???

The Walmart mentality is unhealthy for this country? Really? Given the economic circumstances, I'd say the Walmart mentality is just what this country needs. (Whether Walmart itself is good for this country is a different discussion.) People should look for ways to save money. It is GOOD that people are saving money, using discretion, and evaluating purchases.

Frankly, I see this author as neither a businessman nor an artist. He is not a businessman because he fails to understand how pricing works in the market. He is not an artist because he has no passion in seeing that his words are read by as many people as possible. He has become some horrific hybrid monstrosity that insists that everyone read his books and pay full price for doing so. I never thought I'd see that day that people would be insulted for wanting to save money.

Re: Re: Re: That's all the time we have. Thanks for playing "Let's Skewer Brandt Morin"

@Karen -- That's exactly the point. First, piracy is not a moral dilemma; it is a civil matter, not a criminal one. Copying is not the same as stealing.

Second, bands are proving that they can make MORE money by deliberately inducing "legal piracy". Seeing as how that is the direction the market is slowly turning, this crusade to combat piracy makes BM look incredibly archaic and out of touch with the times.

THAT is why they are met with such "hostility". They are trying to inflict their views on the world ("piracy is evil and destroying the industry") without remaining open to discussion and alternate views on how to make money.

    Re: Re: Re: Original Article

Sorry, Marie, but you have a skewed view of "national markets".

I am a recurring guest on a certain podcast. This podcast has listeners in all 50 states and many countries in other parts of the world. I know this because I have Google Analytics telling me who is clicking on the podcast links. However, I do NOT go around telling people "I am in international markets. I am a WELL KNOWN podcaster!" That's bull. I barely have international market penetration, but most average people will have no idea who I am or what podcast I join every few months.

The same goes for Brandt Morain. Congrats on getting into a magazine with 200,000 readers. That is still far from 300+ million Americans who could potentially hear about this band. Frankly, the claim that "nobody knows who Brandt Morain is" is accurate. Everyone I have brought up this story with has never heard of Brandt Morain. I LIVE IN IDAHO WHERE BRANDT MORAIN IS SUPPOSEDLY FROM, AND NO ONE HAS HEARD OF THEM. Get over it. Your statistics mean nothing at this point.

The choice to "fight piracy" by removing customer's option to buy only ENSURES that people will turn to piracy. If Brandt Morain releases music ANYWHERE, someone will rip it and upload it.

  • Content As Advertising; Advertising As Content On The iPhone

    TheBuzzSaw ( profile ), 28 Jan, 2010 @ 01:42pm

It didn't work out so well last time...

I understand and agree with the point you are making, but it should be noted that this idea has not worked out so well in the past. Remember all those ads that required interactivity? "SHOOT 10 ALIENS TO WIN A NEW LAPTOP!!!" Those tried so hard to be their own forms of content, but they were far more annoying than beneficial.

I would like to see more ads like the one you mentioned. If they stay out of my way until I choose to give them attention, I can tolerate them just fine. It's when they float over the article I am reading that I become upset.
