  • Does The MPAA Simply Make Up Piracy Numbers Out Of Thin Air?

    strangefruit ( profile ), 08 Jul, 2010 @ 12:18am

I realize MPAA represents the movies, RIAA the recording industry, CONGRESS the lobbyists who offer the most socially acceptable form of bribery, but who do those other acronyms represent?

  • Convicted German Murderer Wants His Conviction Erased From Wikipedia

I'm sorry, do you have a German law degree?

I hate to break up the Streisand party, but you baldy state that the person is a "public figure" under German law. Do you know that? I'm sure he's a "public figure" under U.S. law, but most other countries don't have a First Amendment (and wouldn't call it that even if they did).

There are all kinds of laws about speech in other countries -- try talking about Nazis in Germany if you want an example.

You think that this is a dumb law (probably a good point) but don't pretend to give legal advice as to whether the person is covered by the law or not. Unless you got a German law degree when I wasn't looking, you simply don't know.

    Intellectual Property

The scary part about this is that when this kind of thing goes to trial, anyone involved that hears "Intellectual Property infringement" or "Copyright infringement" automatically surrenders all form of common sense/logic and will support any outlandish claims without really thinking very hard about the implications. It happens every day, just look at what the RIAA is doing with Jamie Thomas case.

The value of 24 songs does not equal 1.9 million dollars. They should make her pay 24 dollars for the mp3's which she should have gotten off of Amazon with a small fine and send her on her way.

    Greed is a powerful thing.

    Laziness = not optional

It's not stupid, if I wrote an instant messaging prog I would assume it would be my right to allow / disallow third parties from benefiting from it. If you don't like it, write your own super app if you are able, if not, just have the two running side by side. DON'T BE LAZY.

  • Police Blame Video Games For 2-Year-Old Stabbing 5-Month-Old

    strangefruit ( profile ), 28 May, 2009 @ 11:55am

    Re:

If a child has the mental capacity to plot some sort of violent act of revenge, why then did he not go to the kitchen to get the knife like everyone else?

    Conversely:

If it is common practice for knives to be kept in the kitchen, what kind of person keeps knives at a computer desk with unattended kids?

Blame is no more the fault of the movie industry than it is the fault of the Police for not stopping the stabbing. It is the parents duty to ensure the safety of their children. That being said, accidents do happen, in the video everyone seems on the up and up. I'm just glad everyone is OK. Praise God!

    It's always an issue

If you watch this classic video of "why to never talk to the police," he gives the great piece of information that when you are in a jury trial, you can be assumed guilty by the jury just because they see you in that orange jump suit and in handcuffs.

    Re: Different timelines

The problem isn't that the law is changing too slowly, but that it changed too fast. Had the courts stuck with the "no software patents" rule that reigned from the dawn of the software industry until the 1980s, many of the problems we're seeing now would not have occurred. The problem is precisely that an activist Federal Circuit took it upon themselves to dramatically expand the scope of patentable subject matter during the 1990s,

We're now seeing the courts realize how big of a mistake that is and walk it back. And I suppose it's probably true that 100 years from now non-historians won't remember that there was even a problem. But that doesn't change the fact that in the meantime, the patent system is doing a lot of damage.

  • Surprise, Surprise: E-Voting Glitches Found In Early Voting

    strangefruit ( profile ), 25 Oct, 2008 @ 02:52pm

"if they just keep repeating it, maybe it will become true."

That's because that is how political ads work. It doesn't have to be true, just repeated and people will think of it when they go vote. It is only natural that politians act that way, and no surprise about these machines.

Didn't we find out a long time ago that it doesn't matter who we vote for because the elected person doesn't NEED to win the vote count to become president.

Why are you insulting the South? Do you know anyone that lives in the South? Do you watch video from the '60s and think that's footage from today? Where do you get your information? Movies? What does a user name have to do with anything about this topic? Are you a bitter emo goth 15 year old? Phallacy Fallacy is a super awesome name man, I totally value and respect everything you have to say. No wait, keep your uninformed opinions to yourself. Go post your own blog if you want to insult areas of the country without basis. I doubt you'll succeed in making a blog people will visit, but at least you can vent your severe emotional problems to people that care.

  • MPAA Doubletalk On FCC Request To Block DVR Recordings

    strangefruit ( profile ), 22 Jul, 2008 @ 04:34pm

As is said over and over.. make something worth paying for and people will. Continue to pump out crap and crap remakes is not the way to get people in the theaters.

    Make good stuff, people buy.
Make bad stuff, people won't spend money.

How many years is it going to take to understand this?

I'm not going to spend $10 to go watch some trash.. I'd rather just not watch it at all. Maybe I would be surprised, and the film wasnt complete garbage as I had thought, and be more likely to pick up the dvd when it came out if it was better than expected for the extra dvd content additions but.. If I dont watch it at all, I wont be doing any word of mouth spreading or buying dvds.. so why waste the millions making those shit films to begin with.

  • Do J.R.R. Tolkien's Kids Deserve Money For The Lord Of The Rings Movies?

    strangefruit ( profile ), 04 Jul, 2008 @ 10:11am

Sure are a lot of poor Techdirt readers it seems to me.. jealous much eh? Why so much hate? Cause you live with your parents? Because your parents weren't Tolkien and didn't create something meaningful to thousands of people? Because you are poor and will always be poor? Because you will never get out of your dinky 9-5 or late shift work but these people are 'better' off than you with no 'effort?'

Almost every response post on this article is obvious bitterness from the responders personal life.

Who SHOULD be making the money off Tolken's work? JUST the MOVIE industry? JUST the book publishers? No one in the family should see any money; yet companies that truly did had nothing to do with the creation and are just making money off someone else's idea; should?

I'd rather give some of the money to the family that the wonderful idea came from than give more money that the can use to hunt more people down kthx.
