    Eating Rights Industry

They need a special non-profit group to watch people going into and out of grocery stores and then sign them yearly licensing fees so they can look after those poor starving cooks that are trying to make a living and feed their families. Who in turn will also have to pay fees to eat.

  • Redbox Caves To Warner Bros., Will Delay New Movie Releases From Kiosks

    Re:

I think this is a really good point. How many times have you seen a preview for a movie and totally forgot about it by the time it really comes out.

As for never releasing movies, that sounds like a great idea. Warner Bros. through infinite scarcity could whip up a frenzy of consumer anticipation by never releasing movies. Now that would be a captive audience...for someone else to sell their product.

    Those poor actors

What about those poor successful actors of the late 1800s. Along come this device that can record their acting once and suddenly there's no demand for them to ever act that movie again. Surely that destroyed acting as a career. Those poor misguided fools. If only they had lobbied their governments to make the movie camera illegal for ruining their business model.

    Commercials as Content

What's that thing that Mike always says, advertising is content? Or content is advertising? However it goes...

The nice thing about watching a recorded program on your DVR is that you can skip past the ANNOYING commercials. I think its recognition that most commercials are crap and network execs know this when they complain that no one will watch commercials.

When there are good commercials, advertisements for something I'm interested in or anything of value, I do watch those commercials. Even to the point that I'll rewind them to watch them again.

Who wants to watch crappy commercials? Or the same commercials every commercial break? Am I going to skip over these? Of course! This is a no brainer.

  • Dear Hollywood: Don't Be Idiots; Don't Delay Movie Rentals

    Michael ( profile ), 26 Oct, 2009 @ 01:30pm

    For what it's worth...

I have a decent collection of about 500 movies. I used to just buy new releases without ever actually seeing the movie until I realized that many of these movies were only really good for one viewing, if that.
But now, my decision to buy a movie really comes down to if it has replay value otherwise I'd just rent it, watch it and turn it in.
As for going to the theater to watch a movie, it depends on if it's a movie that has some advantage to seeing in the theater and if that advantage outweighs the negatives of actually going to the theater. Such as the drunk guy yelling at the bad guys on the screen, the people who think its ok to answer their cell phones and talk, general public idiocy and rudeness, etc.
After all, I have a nice home theater, great surround and nice comfy couches. I can stay in and not have a great time.

  • BPI Unhappy With Techdirt, Seeks To Correct The Record… But Still Gets It Wrong

    Michael ( profile ), 02 Oct, 2009 @ 07:29pm

    By This Reasoning....

Since 2003, annual UK broadband revenues have increased from £0.6 billion to £2.7 billion (2008). Recorded music revenues have fallen every year in the same period, principally due to illegal filesharing. It is therefore not difficult to see that the growth of BT's consumer broadband business has been assisted by the increase in illegal filesharing.

    Enlivened?

"But I also want their future to be filled with the kind of music and books and films and other creative sparks that have enlivened my life and our culture through the years."

Because Wolverine was such a 'creative spark' and 'enlivened my life'?

I felt like suing to get my hour and a half of live back. It's the first movie I've ever seen where I actually counted down the minutes until it was over.

The worst part is I saw the leak and thought the final release would be better. But the special effects that weren't finished in the leak were almost better than the final product. At least it was interesting.

  • Has The Recording Industry Finally Realized That Selling 1,000 Songs In One Package Makes Sense?

    Michael ( profile ), 02 Apr, 2009 @ 01:52pm

    Why Sharing is Caring

You know when you share music with friends? You're in your car and some kick ass song comes on and they are like, "Who's this?"

Then you reply, "Oh this is so-and-so. Their first cd sucked but this one is awesome!"

So then, you burn them a cd and say, "Here's a cd from that band you asked about the other day. I think you'll totally love it!"

See, no one burns a cd for their friend and says, "Hey, here's a cd from so-and-so. This cd is complete crap and I'm sure you'll agree with me. Just keep a bucket handy in case it makes you vomit!"

My point is people share experiences they enjoy with their friends. Movies, tv shows, music, whatever. It's really retarded for any group of individuals or businesses to assume that each 'experience', each play for each person is going to equal a sale. If the experience was worth while enough for the person who did not originate the purchase then they may choose to purchase the content which will then be shared with their friends. Which may generate more sales but never in a one-to-one relationship.

Personally, the movie studios and music industry should really be paying me for exposing my friends to music and movies that they otherwise wouldn't have experienced and would never have bought.

My best example is the movie 'Pootie Tang'. Which, if a friend had not exposed me to, I would never have watched. After see it, I bought the movie and have showed it to all my friends. Who, of course, never would have watched it. Now they have experienced it, some have purchased it, but none of them would have if not for someone sharing the experience in the first place.

A referral fee of about 10% sounds good. Thank you very much!

    Ok

The problem isn't the phone. Has no one here with an automatic transmission ever rolled forward without intending to? I remember in high school driving my grandma's automatic and, since I was used to driving a stick, rolled into the car in front of me. Accidents happen.

Looking at his phone, changing the radio station, checking out the blond hippy, whatever.

  • Is Anything In Shepard Fairey's Image Actually Copyrightable By The AP?

    Michael ( profile ), 03 Mar, 2009 @ 03:56am

  • Most Popular Superbowl Ad Created By Amateurs

    Michael ( profile ), 02 Feb, 2009 @ 11:51pm

    The real point is..

that most content sucks, regardless of who does it.

Just because a 'professional' has created content does not make it good. A perfect example is the commercials aired during the superbowl, most were not worth watching. Most music, movies, tv shows, commercials, web sites, books, etc are crap. It's a fact of life for content.

Competition is a good thing, the more the merrier.
