    playing for beer money

i played in several bar bands over the course of about twenty years, for "beer money" but there wwas always enough to take some home, and it actually was a useful extra income. i was married for most of this time and had four kids to feed. had i been single, i could have lived on it.

established artists really don't make that much more (they do, but they pay for a lot of services that whittle the take down to less impressive values). some artists or acts obviously command a higher price, but many of the financially secure artists also work for hire, either as studio sidemen, sound engineers, producers, etc, which might indicate a need to put bread on the table as much as creative genius.

playing music isn't an oilwell or a goldmine, but if you need to play music, may as well do it.

    Re: Re: Re:

as a kalamazooan who has not personally had dealings with t&j, i've heard nothing at all good about them. i know at least three people who had their cars moved despite being legally and properly parked. i believe they have a contract with wmu, and get the bulk of campus area towing business.

i don't think that anyone's car should be towed for improper parking until a ticket is issued by an accountable parking authority.

    driving while yakking...

...that's absurd. a recent study shows that about 1 in 40 drivers isn't adversely affected by talking on a cell phone. about the same number are able to drive well while under the effects of alcohol.

some of the distraction comes from the conversation, but i've gotta believe that the forced position necessary to use the phone, is a bigger factor. people who can be shown to have sent text messages while driving should probably be summarily executed.

most cells i'm familiar with support a level of hands free operation, voice dial, speaker phone or bluetooth, if those were used, im sure that the change would be a positive one. of course the rest of the motoring public will see a person talking to their self, bad for your image, assuming you are important enough for them to care.

of course there should be laws limiting the use of any communications equipment that requires the user to take a hand off the wheel, are you kidding?

    Re: allman bros and others

oddly, the **aas claim that downloads cheat their clients, those being the artists, yet when they figure out how to provide downloads, they claim the artists shouldn't benefit from them.

they aren't pirates, they're organized criminals, and should be prosecuted under rico, not sued by individual artists.

Re: Re: Wouldn't it be funny if

at some point you have to trust that you endowed enough resources on your child that he or she can deal independently with normal social occurrences.

i tend to guess that ms drew was not a popular student when she was a teen, and was doing the same thing a lot of non-varsity dads do with their sons vis a vis sports or other manly activities. the crap i've seen and heard in my life as a dad of four kids...

    but that's the kind...

...of thing laws are commonly thought to deal with. there are many things lori drew did wrong, the first and pivotal one was to get overinvolved in her daughter's social life. once you accept that it is a parent's place to intervene in their kids conflicts (other than those involving violence or illegal acts), the jump to spying on the evil little neighbor girl who is saying things about my darling becomes.
once that is rationalized away, further poor judgement ensues and escalates. in my opinion, she should be ostracized by her neighborhood in a non-threatening but non-accepting way, but defining that would be almost as impossible as making that kind of punishment a part of the court system. teens vary a great deal in their ability to get a grip on reality, and the possibility that megan would hurt herself or someone else should have preceded her myspace creepiness. she's not a murderer, just an extremely stupid and self-absorbed (perhaps she was actively dissed while in her teens)woman who allowed herself to catalyze a suicide. i hope she is deeply regretful of her actions and will never again even consider using the secret agent routine to mind her children's business. i hope even more that she will learn when to butt out.

    Re: telco immunity

the point of focus is misplaced, a trial against the telcos might actually find them not guilty, if the administration gets this fact they might have a win-lose/win-win situation.

a trial bias is relatively easy to set, and could give bush et al a 'vindication'.

it isn't about the telcos, it's about the administrative branch's ability to strong-arm anyone they choose into doing whatever they request.

    privatizing copyright registration...

with few exceptions, privatization has not been good for previously governmental functions. i believe that there already is a tendency to take registration at face value, and in this era of ip (as a generic concept of plagiarism or misappropriation of concepts or ideas originated by others) fraud careful evaluation needs to be a given. it's easy to criticize someone else's budget and suggest the private sector can cut costs without cutting services. since the venture is for-profit, the cost cutting comes first, after which they often find they didn't leave enough to support the current level of service. a privatized copyright authority might make the process faster at the expense of infringed parties, causing them to take legal action (or backing down, depending on how good their lawyers are)to protect what should already be protected.

    it used to be

that it was a compliment and an honor for someone or group of someones to care enough about the trivia of a children's book series to write such a book. i'm thinking "get a life" but it probably amounts to 'scholarly research'.

she really needs a clue about what's in her professional interest, and that of her creations.
