Of course they don't care about driving traffic to the site. Its about grandstanding for the public. They could be reviewing everything short of kiddie porn and the politicians wouldn't bat an eye.

    Re: Varying levels of 'protest'

they weren't inciting violence nor were they doing anything constitutionally illegal. This was the equivalent of flashing your lights to other drivers to let them know that a cop is around the corner busting speeders. They get pissy when someone gets a leg up on them.

  • Rather Than Suing, Jack Thompson Apparently Should Have Just Clicked The 'Report Abuse' Button

Gamepolitics.com has gone above and beyond in attempting treat Thompson fairly and actually give the guy a place to vent his garbage. Of course the commenters have been less than polite but given Jack's rhetoric, he shouldn't be surprised.

BTW, I can assure you Thompson is very familiar with the Safe Harbors law. Its just that Jacky boy wants the law bent to his own narcissistic view and doesn't give a shit about existing case-law, court decorum, protocol, etc.

  • Even After Being Disbarred, Jack Thompson Can File Misguided Mistargeted Lawsuits

    Tom Landry ( profile ), 01 Oct, 2009 @ 02:04am

    Re: Hmm

....but the social networking sites seriously need to be forced to hold some form of responsibility if they are just going to let things like threats--or worse--happen.

You are either incredibly naive or just trolling.

So you beleive enacting some kind of legislation is going to stop people from being (and there's no other word for it) assholes? You don't see any kind of slippery slope insofar as free speech is concerned? Do you realize the amount of content that users put up on Facebook daily? It numbers in the tens of millions. Facebook is simply a tool to let people connect and is no more responsible for "allowing" that girls death than it is for juvenile idiots threatening Thompson. That's why the Safe Harbors legislation was enacted. While the girls death is tragic, she could have reacted the same way to a phone call or a handwritten letter. Would you then accuse Verizon or the US Postal Service of "allowing" it to happen?

what kills me is that the very blogs that he accuses of attacking him have gone out of their way to be cordial and have given him plenty of space to spout his moronic rhetoric. Kotaku, Destructoid, Gamepolitics, etc have given him far more courtesy than the guy deserves.

  • The Rule Of Law Over The Rule Of Reason

    Tom Landry ( profile ), 30 Sep, 2009 @ 05:21am

Forget the police, the prosecutor should be certified insane:

While the law was written with the intent of stopping people from purchasing large quantities of drugs to make methamphetamine, the law does not say the purchase must be made with the intent to make meth.

“The law does not make this distinction,” Alexander said…

Just as with any law, the public has the responsibility to know what is legal and what is not, and ignorance of the law is no excuse, the prosecutor said.

“I’m simply enforcing the law as it was written,” Alexander said…

It is up to customers to pay attention to their purchase amounts, and to check medication labels, Alexander said.

    Truly mind bending.

    Re:

First contact should have been to the CEO and along the lines of "I have means immediately at hand to direct more traffic to your site and raise its "brand" recognition to a larger base of potential users. Since you site is ad based, and since "hits" serve to enhance your business model and revenue, I would like to talk with you about how we can accomplish this for our mutual benefit."

Yeah, god forbid the guy isn't versed in draconian corporate-speak. What was he thinking?

One should always be cognizant of the fact that business executives are the ones who tell the lawyers what to do, and not vice versa

except the entertainment industry where company attorneys filter every single concept and word to a point far beyond what the FCC rules require as a margin of "safety" against fines. For their contribution we get safe, bland non-offensive pap and management that is afraid to take chances on anything potentially edgy-but-entertaining.

Re: Re: Re: I'd call it abuse...

she "suffered" nothing. Are you an attorney because only the vile practitioners of that line of work would use that terminology. She got called a few names which is par for the course if you are a public figure making an ass out of yourself.

read the entire comment thread of that blog. its incredibly clear even to my limited intellect that Lilly is obviously an incredibly thinned skinned person who refuses to take any constructive criticism. Rather than sit back and try to argue in a reasoned manner (she only responded to the easiest arguments to dispel and judiciously avoided the well argued ones) she stomped off with her ball and shut down any further ability to debate the issue. That, my friend, is what I call being a petulant child.

She can argue about file-sharing until she's blue in the face. When her bank account gets to zero I'm sure she'll then be open to new ideas.

I'll just reiterate what SteveD said which is that majority of comments on her blog were respectful and tried to show why her position was the wrong one. Granted, there were a few "Dumb cunt" posts but for someone in the entertainment business to get flustered over a few trolls like that speaks more about her ability to understand the more complex issue behind the subject matter.

Overall, i got the impression that Lilly Allen is a childish, spoiled, thin skinned elitist who seems to have surrounded herself with "yes men" and doesn't tolerate any dissenting opinion.
