NSA has no credibility -- even if their advice was legitimate and helpful -- they should just keep their mouth shut about internet security matters, because whatever they say will be looked at with skepticism. It's like asking someone -- when did you stop beating your wife? -- can't win

  • Apr 27, 2011 @ 05:23am

    Really?

AJBarnes -- if NY Times is not your cup of team, DON'T read it. DON'T pay for it -- in fact why comment on this story in the first place. The assumption is that those people who enjoy reading the times -- which I don't but my wife does, what will they do? Will they sign up, look for workarounds or stop reading. We're thinking about getting a weekender subscription which comes with online access. Which is actually cheaper than getting the online access only -- so the numbers need to take into account how many people signed up for home delivery to get the online version of the paper. Oh, and it's not the news my wife reads most of the time it's opinion pieces and editorials, which some people find interesting -- but hey -- if all you do is troll on the internet, how would you what's in a real news paper? Btw, this is the reason I subscribe to ESPN the magazine, to get the espn.com insider -- I couldn't care less about the dead tree version, but I have to get it to get the insider. The business model is backwards -- force you to pay for dead trees to get access to the real content online.

    Sirius XM

This would be very sad if they go under. I've been a subscriber for close to 3 years, and even though I signed up to listen to NFL and Howard, I now mostly listen to comedy, talk and music stations. Don't give me the crap about internet radio, and podcasts or MP3s or whatever. I've listened to all of my MP3s 10 times over, I can't get internet radio in the car. And as much as I love listening to podcasts, there is no comparison to always on 24/7 200+ channels of programming. The fact is anything on your MP3 player requires effort to find, keep sync'ed up and so forth. Sirius is there when you turn it on, the merger might have cut some channels for XM folks, but there is still nothing out there to take it's place. Let's hope they can fix what's wrong and be around for a while.

    Good Idea

I seem to be the only one who thinks it's a good idea. I don't care about the logistics of keeping tabs and verifying the information. The key is require them to register. That's all. And if they don't and somehow the state finds out, they violate their parole. Enforcement is a different issue, but the idea is correct. We make them register their addresses, this is a modern world, if the state is going to keep tabs on pervs, lets make sure we at least have the laws on the books that require them to register this info with some penalties if they don't. Everyone wants to bash him for trying to get attention, but the idea is long over due. Sometimes politicians acting in their self interest do come up with good ideas that can help the public.

Live and let live (you lost by the way)

13: Honestly if you are under the opinion that gays are ruining the country, you must have just gotten out of prison and are sore as hell about it, or are you pissed that your job doesn't provide you with pages? To be so anti-gay, and to spout off your bigotry on a tech forum, and an article about a completely unrelated topic, you must have some repressed feelings. Did your daddy not love you enough? In fact your religious fanaticism shows more commonality with a faith inspired bunch who flew some large planes into NY 5 years ago. They don't like gays either. FYI, the country clearly doesn't agree with you, and believing that a God, any God would hate any group of people based on anything -- race, weight, sexual orientation, IQ number, is well not very Christian. Isn't love thy neighbor written in the Bible? I don't recall it saying Love Thy neighbor unless he is fag.
I'm not a fan of political correctness myself either, so Marry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Quanza, and my the good Lord bless you with some tolerance on this holiday season.

    Solution

Here is fix. A judge should force these idiots to pay court costs and legal fees. And let apple and others be liberal with figuring out the numbers. These lawsuits should be made so risky that this crap wont happen again.

    Cosmetics

I was in line at Heathrow on Sunday, and the "cosmetics counter" of confiscated cosmetics could bring in a few grand easily. Forget the phones.

Its Dorpus, most people on Techdirt have learned to ignore him

    India?

I had a call with a customer service rep and I had a major communication problem, asked for a supervisor, got one and asked where was this person I was talking to based and why was there such a language issue, she said he was based in Texas, and he was American -- now, maybe she was not allowed to tell me he was in Bangalor, and I did hear an accent from the guy I was talking to, but Texas, or India, he was not well trained or educated -- maybe not even human -- I could have been talking to a pod person -- in either case 5 minutes with him was enough to demand a supervisor.

Would somebody think of the children

    Enough!!!
They are not the future, 20 and 30 somethings are the future. They can't vote and wrapping the world in bubblewrap will not make it any safer. Just think how much we love to pop bubblewrap. So basically this bill will teach kids how to use a proxy and putty. Good skill. So, hmm I guess in terms of educating little Jenny and Jimmy about the workings of the internet, this bill might do some good, but protecting them from -- hmm Facebook, or ... those crazy guys at Amazon, it will be useless. PS who do they think will be setting up filters -- high school kids working for the district computer tech. So, I'm all for it I was a tech and if we had this bill, maybe I would have been paid more than 6 bucks/hour.

    Different Case

That's regarding the wiretapping case -- this something different.

  • Jul 19, 2006 @ 12:15pm

    Satelite

I lived in a building where tenents could have satelites on the roof. There were no problems for years, I mean over a decade, then the building got sold, and the owner chose to make a deal with someone -- don't know and don't care and he sent out letters that if everyone doesn't remove their dishes he will sue. I moved out. Last I knew the buildings in the comples were about a third empty. Suits the a-hole right. Telling people what they can and can't do after the fact is crummy, threatening them with a law suit is well -- I guess American. Good luck renting that crap hole for 1300 bucks again.

    Simple

Guys and gals if any read techdirt, why does everything have to evolve to the slipery slope argument, if they allow japanese swimsuit books/child porn what ever you call them, then how can they ban cockfighting, lets stop comparing these 2 things and move on.
On the concept of cockfighting, your brain will not explode by having 2 ideas in it with differring views -- i don't want to see cockfighting, and don't want to subscribe to the magazines, but if someone else does -- thats fine. Wow my brain is still intact, let me try the next one. I don't aprove with these "sports" cockfighting, dog fighting, but I don't want the government or the court system to step in and stop it -- damn I said that and I'm still alive. Wow, I must be odd or something 'cause now days if you are capable of having 2 apposing thoughts in your head -- like I'm against the war, but support the troops -- you're treated as an alien.

    Make secure code

Make secure code MS. I'm a programmer myself, and I have to say that if I've had to make critical fixes to something on a regular basis, I'd get a stern talking to from my management, and would surely be out of a job very quickly. This is slopiness and laziness plain and simple. If MS products where so swiss cheesed, this would not be an issue.

    Easy

They fired a bunch of people and found 600 mill to invest into this nonsence.

  • Jul 13, 2006 @ 07:13am

    Off the mark

Come on guys. The arguments of if and how much 50-60-70-90 year olds know about computers are pointless, there are exceptions to every rule. My mom is 50 and is a computer programmer -- you think she doesnt know how to install XP? My grandma is 72 and she wouldnt know how to turn it on. Does that mean that every 50 year old knows how to write a sql query and how to performance tweak an oracle database, no, nor does it mean that every 70 year old would be lost in front of this newfangled machine.
The point here is -- Ted Stephens has the finger on the off switch for these "tubes" and DOESNT HAVE A FRIEKING CLUE!!!. He has been paid off by the telcos and have been fed a bunch of gobelty gook by some 20 year old trying to explain to him how the internet works. I am sure the used the word pipes, he just substituted tubes. How to you convince someone that we need tiered internet -- well the pipes will get filled up and we need to make sure normal people can get their e-mails-- ohhh messages. where he go dump trucks, I have no clue. In either case, the point is the man in charge or the interent knows as much about the internet as my 72 year old granmother, or my 2 year old niece. And that scares me. This is the same man who built a bridge to nowhere while the very same good people of Alaska he represents said they would rather have the money go to New Orlense, this shmoe kept his prok barrel. This is not about age and who knows what. This is about one man, and the fact that each and every voter in Alaska should be ashamed of voting for this ass.

    HUH?

I pay 57 for phone bill + dsl 6 MB down and 768kb up.

130 sounds like you're getting ripped off.

    We're the chumps

They ef us every which way possible. They sue our friends and relatives and they gouge us -- from what I gather the only 2 things that have drastically outpaced inflation -- gas prices and movie tickets. Yet we still come back for more, it is the trademarks of an abusive relationship, and until we learn to leave them for good, they won't change. Boycott the transformers movie. 20somethings will still go to the theaters in droves to see this movie regardless of how much we think hollywood doesn't get us -- they get us, they got the stuff and they know we won't stay away.

  • Jul 06, 2006 @ 08:55am

    Tubes are all clogged up!!!

The internets arive late, because the tubes are all filled up with youtube stuff, so this is a big problem.

  • Jun 23, 2006 @ 08:14am

    Bad move

I think the guy should be vilified for wasting everyone's time. He should also be forced to pay any and all court costs that google had to put out as well as court clerks...etc. This is is a waste of our tax dollars, and it should carry a fine when people use the court system with what is clearly baseless and time wasting lawsuits to push their own agenda, it's discusting. Someone should sue his ass for being an idiot --just as baseless, but I'm sure you could find a few of his gradeschool teachers who would agree.
