  • Daily Deal: Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate Bundle

    About as useful...

in 5 years as a Novel certification is today. MS is shooting themselves in the foot with their shady data collection, no corporation in their right mind would deploy them now. After Windows 7 becomes unsupported, expect mass migration to open source platforms.

  • Time Warner Cable CEO: Cable TV Pricing Is So High Because We're The Mercedes Of Entertainment

    Mercedes of entertainment?

So you are overpriced and unreliable? Except, unlike a Mercedes, you can't trade it in for a better brand. Nice.

    Free speech Zone

As far as I know, the borders of the United States of America constitute the "Free Speech Zone". It may be different for a private college, but as they are a public institution, and taking Federal dollars, the likelihood that their restrictions will hold up in a court of law is probably very close to zero.

Still problems, even without IP issues

Sure, they should cut out the IP language completely. But then you still have the "corporate sovereignty" issues, which also need to be cut. Then there is the rest of the treaty, which is still problematic for American workers. No one remembers what happened the LAST time a huge "Free Trade" agreement was passed? (NAFTA) Oh yeah, we lost the textile industry, the furniture manufacturing industry, and many many more...jobs went "WHOOSH!" right out of the country, along with many people's chance of remaining in the middle class!

  • Cable's Latest Great Idea: Speed Up Programs So They Can Stuff More Ads Into Every Hour

    jnemesh ( profile ), 25 Feb, 2015 @ 11:25am

    Ads, ads everywhere

Another sleazy tactic I noticed the other night. I tuned into USA Network...Independence Day was on (the best choice of available programming at the time, which says a LOT right there!.

I tuned to the channel...and commercials were airing. IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING the commercial, the movie starts up, it's the big scene where the alien ships first appear...you see the shadow of one crawl slowly across the National Mall, and approach the Washington Monument...then "Bzzzt"! A special effect is added, similar to what you see in a movie when someone "hacks" a TV signal...the picture then cuts to a 3 second COMMERCIAL for their new TV show "The Dig"...complete with audio (a whispered voiceover)...then "Bzzt!" Back to the movie!

Bad enough that we have to sit through an HOUR AND A HALF of commercials for a 90 minute movie...but now they are interrupting the movie itself to add additional ads???

Seriously...screw this shit! I would rather do just about ANYTHING else than watch cable TV these days!

  • Samsung's Smart TVs Are Collecting And Storing Your Private Conversations

    jnemesh ( profile ), 09 Feb, 2015 @ 08:14am

    Re:

You can always just disable the feature from the menu as well. This "revelation" shouldn't be any surprise...the same thing applies to that new Amazon product that "listens", as well as when you use "Siri" or "Google Now" or "Cortana". Also true if you are using a Kinect with the Xbox One (one of the major reasons I didn't buy into Microsoft's gaming box this time around...ESPECIALLY when, right before launch, they were saying Kinect was REQUIRED to be plugged in and operational, now at least it's optional!)

While the fact that your TV has been "listening" to you has been true for several years...the fact that Samsung is disclosing exactly what it is doing should alleviate a lot of concern here.

I work for a distributor, catering to custom A/V installers, and I ALWAYS recommend that they disable these features. One, they don't work as well as they should, and two, it invades your privacy. Same goes with the "motion controls" that work with the camera. It will be a cold day in hell before I have an internet connected camera and mic in my bedroom or living room! That being said, I have no problems owning a set like this...as long as the feature is disabled.

  • Cable's Answer To A Changing TV Landscape? Stuff More Ads Into Every Hour

    jnemesh ( profile ), 03 Feb, 2015 @ 02:35pm

    Re:

Ever try to watch a movie these days? As a child, I would watch a 90 minute movie on TV (in the 70s), and it would take 2 hours. Watch that same movie today? THREE hours! Thats another full SIXTY MINUTES of ads padded in there...and it makes watching movies on cable TV simply unbearable. Adding another 10% or so? Deal breaker. When they start doing this I am cutting off cable, I don't care if it IS more expensive for my internet without it!

  • MPAA's Lies About Films Being Available Online Easily Debunked In Seconds

    jnemesh ( profile ), 02 Feb, 2015 @ 12:28pm

    How about this idea?

Instead of the theaters constantly trying to protect their bloated release windows and keeping current movies offline...how about they offer a different experience to compensate them for "lost revenue" when films go online earlier?

For instance, "Game of Thrones" is going to show 2 episodes in theaters. Just a guess, but I am thinking these showings will QUICKLY sell out! Why not show EVERY episode in theaters, the night it airs on HBO? HBO would get a cut of the profits, and the theater owners would pack people in on a usually slower Sunday night!

This could EASILY be done these days, we have theaters with digital projectors, we have online distribution of content...all we need is some cooperation between theater owners and content producers!

This could also easily be applied to other shows. Imagine going to the theater to see the next "Star Trek" TV series or the new season of "House of Cards".

There is still plenty of appeal for the theatrical experience, even at the sometimes ludicrous prices they are asking these days...give us a REASON to come to your theater, and we will come.

  • Paris, France To Sue Fox News For Being Fox News

    Re:

They are promoting their agenda of fear and xenophobia...which on it's own is wholly out of line with the principles America was founded on. They are making Muslims the "boogeyman" that everyone needs to fear, and which "honest, hardworking Americans" need to push out of our country. This particular assertion that Islam is "taking over" cities in Europe is designed to do nothing less than undermine the credibility of the governments of the EU and get "red blooded" (read "red voting") Americans to get angry and demand that everyone who is slightly different from their ideal (white skinned) to be deported. It's disgusting in the extreme that some choose to defend this.

I bet you also never went into a "zone" where the State Laws were suspended and "Sharia Law" was enforced by religious police, either!

I don't know how some fools can defend Fox's lies! Bending the truth is one thing, but these guys twist it like a pretzel and salt it with a sprinkle of hate speech and then have the GALL to call it "News"!

That is different from having a neighborhood be under "Sharia Law" and having outsiders "forbidden from entry"! By a country MILE! (or Kilometer)

This wasn't news, this wasn't opinion, this was SENSATIONALISM at it's WORST, and Fox SHOULD be punished!

  • Paris, France To Sue Fox News For Being Fox News

    Free speech DOES have limits!

Even in the US, the 1st Amendment does not give you the right to libel and slander. It does not give you the right to yell "Fire!" in a theater (unless there really IS a fire, of course).

Paris has EVERY right to sue Fox News. They put forth an erroneous statement that is considered libelous. They INTENTIONALLY put out BAD NEWS, devoid of ANY facts, and this news reflected poorly on a number of cities that were mentioned. All Paris has to do is show that those comments caused MATERIAL HARM (which is tough, but they can probably do it), and they will win the case.

I believe that everyone has a right to spew whatever lies they want, but when those lies MATERIALLY and negatively impact someone else, that's where your rights END!

    New Sherlock Holmes stories...

Maybe you should reference the Star Trek: TNG Episodes which featured Moriarty (and Data as Holmes). Or the CBS show "Elementary", or the (ugh) Benedict Cumberbatch show...among MANY MANY others. What about "The Great Mouse Detective" from years back? Holmes has appeared NUMEROUS times over the past several years in film and television.

    Re: Re: Yet another reason

Fortunately, we are seeing more and more "AAA" games being ported over to Linux. There is very little reason for most home users to use Windows these days (especially since Windows 8 was released!)...once we have Office 365 accessible on Linux, there won't be much reason to use it at work, either...other than the entrenched preferences of the IT people who make such choices.
