  • TV Networks Finally Discover Live Streaming; Still Get It Really, Really Wrong

    jeff ( profile ), 15 May, 2013 @ 10:19am

I would love to be able to cut cable TV at our house. But the wife won't let me. All I would need is an OTA antenna and my Apple TV. Would love to save the $75 a month. Not sure I would save it though. I'd probably spend the money I saved by not having cable TV to increase my Internet speed to the max on FiOS.

  • Virginia ISP Locks Customers Into 25-75 Year Contracts; Sues Everybody When Monopoly Threatened

The county officials who sign these contracts should be fired. This would set a precedent. If these government officials are held accountable, maybe they'll think twice before signing a deal like this in the future.

  • Hollywood Continues Its Plan To Kill Netflix

    jeff ( profile ), 25 Mar, 2011 @ 08:16am

HBO and Showtime are middlemen with old technology (cable). Netflix and Amazon are middlemen with new technology (streaming). As long as companies like HBO and Showtime continue to hold on to the cable only world, they will fail. Netflix is to HBO what HBO was to NBC. The future is Internet only. No cable. Plus Netflix has completely disrupted the price structure set by HBO and Showtime. They want over $20 a month for service thats only available on cable. Netflix wants $9 a month for streaming service. Netflix gives you access to way more movies. HBO and Showtime gives you access to more original shows. But now that Netflix is entering that game, HBO and Showtime are scared. HBO and Showtime need to decide whether they want to be a "channel" or a producer.

  • Hulu CEO So Careful Not To Upset Cable Companies, He Might Just Destroy His Own Business

    When ESPN becomes available ...

As soon as I can get ESPN on the Internet, that is college football games, I'm done with cable.

  • Is The iPad The Disneyland Of Computers?

    @Designerfx

All Macs are for media consumption?

I guess you don't attend many developer conferences. Go to PyCon. About 65-70% MacBooks. Attend RailsConf. About the same. Attend most web developer conferences. MacBooks are the standard, not the exception.

  • Wait, Who Wants A Proprietary, Locked Down Device That Limits What You Can Do?

    jeff ( profile ), 27 Jan, 2010 @ 04:51pm

You're thinking about it the wrong way

If the user experience is far better on a locked down, proprietary device, people will choose that one. If someone can build a tablet running Linux or Chrome OS that comes close to what the iPad can offer, then the "open" product may win. But it isn't about whether its open or not, its about how good of a user experience it is.

  • Apple Blocks Google App From iPhone While Trying To Patent The Same Invention?

    Chris hates his kids

You got your kid a Zune over an iPod? You are truly evil. I can understand the Droid except the fact that you are a hypocrite. Won't buy Apple because of their "controls" over their devices, yet you get a Droid which runs on Verizon, probably the most controlling corporation in existence.

  • Time For Palm To Drop WebOS And Embrace Android

    jeff ( profile ), 04 Nov, 2009 @ 01:38pm

    Re: Strange

Android before 2.0 was slow. But the hardware it ran on was even slower. Even now, the only hardware that runs it well is the new Motorola Droid. Even the HTC's are still using outdated CPU's.

    jeff ( profile ), 04 Nov, 2009 @ 01:35pm

    Re:

If its slow, its not the OS, its the hardware. Outdated processors in the Pre's. You can't compete with Apple using outdated hardware. Subsidized phones means you need to have the latest and greatest hardware.

  • News Corps.' Jon Miller Continues His War Against Free; Wants Hulu To Charge

    jeff ( profile ), 04 Jun, 2009 @ 06:59am

I don't have a problem paying to watch shows

But I do have a problem paying Hulu. I'd love to pay to watch shows from HBO like Entourage and Big Love. I wish HBO would make them available online.

Hulu is trying to be the Cox, Verizon, Comcast, or Time-Warner of the web. Hulu will probably want you to sign up with them just like you do with cable tv now. No alacarte. Probably a tiered system.

My problem with Hulu is the fact that it is owned by a media giant. I would rather have a good open source client that hooked into networks like HBO. We don't need the middleman. Lets get the show straight from the source.

  • Labels Losing Money With iTunes Variable Pricing

    jeff ( profile ), 05 May, 2009 @ 09:11am

    I don't buy the $1.29 tracks

I just looked for three songs last night. All from the 1970's. Amazingly, all three were $1.29. No purchases from me.

  • Coldplay Giving Away Free CD At Shows And Free Downloads

They better give away a CD for free

I wanted to see them in concert, but turns out the tickets were over $100 each. For that price, I would hope they would give me a CD.

  • Taking Suggestions: What Else Should We Ban While Driving?

    jeff ( profile ), 29 Jun, 2008 @ 06:43am

Why do people pause their Tivo when they get a phone call?

Why? Because they can't concentrate on the tv show. So why is it ok to drive while talking on the phone? Remember, driving is not a right, its a privilege.

  • Video Gamers Sue EA Over Exclusive Sports Games

    jeff ( profile ), 16 Jun, 2008 @ 06:59am

    Re:

This is nothing new. EA's products have always sucked. I was a very happy owner of Earl Weaver Baseball 1.0 and 1.5 back in the 80's. Then 2.0 came out and it was horrible. EA should have been sued for releasing it. It was incredibly buggy. They never provided updates for it and never released another version of it.

  • Palm Centro Hits Market Sweet Spot; Making Smartphones Affordable

    jeff ( profile ), 20 Feb, 2008 @ 05:21am

I received a Centro in December. For the first time in my life, I find myself text messaging. How much do I like the Centro? Not much. The keyboard is too small for my fingers. The touch screen doesn't always work. The screen is too small. The browser sucks. The email client won't work with Google Mail(IMAP). I have a relative that works for Sprint so I'm on the unlimited data plan very cheaply. But I plan to switch to the next generation iPhone whenever it comes out. I need better browsing capabilities.

  • NFL Pushing Boundaries Of Ridiculous: Demands Photo Journalists Advertise Sponsors At Games

    jeff ( profile ), 26 Jul, 2007 @ 06:23am

But lets blame the players whenever there is a loc

Lets face it. Owners are crooks. They are billionaires, the players are millionaires. But wait until the next lockout. Notice I said lockout, not strike. Which is what has happened the last 10 years in just about every major sport. Its the owners who lock the players out because owners and the players associations can't come to agreements. Yet, the fan immediately blames the player.

And remember, we pay for it in the end. Don't go to games? You're still paying. You think ESPN is free? Did you know ESPN is responsible for over 50% of your cable bill?

I prefer college football over the NFL. Its not even close. But I still have to watch it on ESPN.

  • Baseball Changes Story Against Fantasy League; Doesn't Know When To Give Up For Its Own Good

    jeff ( profile ), 10 Aug, 2006 @ 06:19am

    Owners are greedy

Its the American way. Everyone wants their cut. If every fantasy league out there had to give a cut to MLB, NFL, NBA, etc. then they would be raking in huge amounts of cash.

Good thing the courts determined that greed has gone too far.

  • Why Would The US Gov't Get Involved In Taking Down Foreign Music Sites?

    jeff ( profile ), 05 Jun, 2006 @ 07:26am

    Why wouldn't they?

What is the U.S. government? Forget the Preamble to the Constitution. Thats history. The government is an organization that is formed to work in the interests of corporations. And foreign music sites are in the interest of corporations.
