Ugh, I really don't like TechDirt's login system.
I thought I was logged in, but apparently wasn't.
You guys should make it more obvious if you're not signed in... or when you sign in and check keep me signed in, actually have it keep you signed in.

  • More Evidence Suggests That iPhone App Store Doesn't Really Sell That Much…

    Nicholas Overstreet ( profile ), 09 Oct, 2009 @ 06:29am

I fall in to this category

I have bought exactly 1 app from the app store. That 1 app was a game which I bought the first day I brought the phone home.
Even that 1 app I regret paying the $10 for, and I seriously doubt I will ever buy another one.
Novelty apps for a novelty device. Not worth the money IMO.

    +1
It's like these boneheads whine and cry about google indexing their site (heaven forbid they get traffic on their site), instead of taking about 5 seconds to add in the lines to block google from indexing their site.
They act like they're helpless victims when they're anything but.

  • Satriani And Coldplay Settle Lawsuit Over Melody… Which Is Really Too Bad

    Nicholas Overstreet ( profile ), 14 Sep, 2009 @ 01:19pm

This happens all the time, so what?

Bands do this ALL the time.
Theory of a Deadman's "Bad Girlfriend" borrows directly from The Cult's "Fire Woman" but you don't see The Cult getting their panties in a bunch do you? (Maybe ToaDM had permission from The Cult, I don't know).
Satriani seems like some broke joke who is just trying to get a final pay day in there.
Even with the same melody in the background, the songs are so dissimilar I don't think it should even be a question of infringement. But, that's just me I guess...

  • Does No One Remember That Google Tried And Failed To 'Rent' Videos Online In The Past?

    Nicholas Overstreet ( profile ), 04 Sep, 2009 @ 08:56am

Unless YouTube does something about it's absolutely horrible quality, they'll get no where with this.
Not only are their "HD" or "HQ" videos absolute jokes in terms of quality, but their videos constantly cut out and have to re-buffer due to their bandwidth issues.
If I can't watch a 40 second youtube clip with out being annoyed, I seriously doubt I would ever make it through a 2 hour movie from them.

    Good idea

I like this idea. There definitely needed to be some way to easily tell recent changes with out looking through the page's revision history. Too bad it took them such a long time to implement something, but still good that they are actually going forward with it.

  • Doctor Who Uploaded Rorschach Images Now Being Investigated

Are they going to get them all?

    Googled: rorschach test images
Results 1 - 10 of about 233,000 for rorschach test images. (0.23 seconds)

Looks like they have about 233,000 other people to go after as well. Good luck with the witch hunt!

So how is TPB's impending shut down a victory?

What do the movie studios hope to accomplish by this?
Do they think that every who uses TPB will just STOP their activities when TPB goes under?
Is that seriously what they think?

  • If You're Going To Meter Broadband, Shouldn't You At Least Make Sure The Meters Work?

    Nicholas Overstreet ( profile ), 26 Jun, 2009 @ 06:17am

    Wait a minute...

Maybe I'm confused, but isn't metered bandwidth a giant step BACKWARDS in technology?
Maybe they should just start selling us minutes of connection time. Yeah, there yah go. 500 minutes of cable modem access time a month!
And maybe they could use some special software to connect.
Oh, they could mass market the software with CD's mailed out to anyone and everyone!

  • How The Lock Industry Put Its Head In The Sand, Rather Than Deal With Vulnerabilities To Locks

    Nicholas Overstreet ( profile ), 01 Jun, 2009 @ 09:07am

    Interesting Article

My eyes were really opened to the vulnerability of common every day locks a couple years ago. My girlfriend found her old Master Lock combination lock and wanted to use it again, unfortunately she had no idea what the combination for it was. I did a little research online and had the combination cracked in about 20 minutes. I practiced the skill a bit more and was eventually able to open most Master Lock dial-combination with in 2 minutes. I was really shocked at how easy it was to do.
I've lost the skill since then since I haven't had a use for it... but it really opened my eyes.

  • AT&T Says Its Network Can't Keep Up With All The Cool Stuff You Can Do With The Smartphones It Sells

    Nicholas Overstreet ( profile ), 14 May, 2009 @ 06:15am

What is AT&T doing with all their money???

With how much money AT&T is making off the outrageously over-priced iPhone contracts, there is no excuse for this.
AT&T is refusing to improve network infrastructure, and this will come back to bite them in the butt, hopefully sooner than later.

  • Techno Slap Chop Informercial Remix… Infringement Or Brilliant?

    Nicholas Overstreet ( profile ), 05 May, 2009 @ 11:53am

I think it's a form of art and no where close to infringement.
If someone took a brand new Chevy Malibu, disassembled it, hacked it up, and made some crazy sculpture out of it's parts, it wouldn't be an infringement on Chevy. Sure you can tell it was once a Chevy Malibu, but it is not any more. Just like Rap Chop used to be a Slap Chop infomercial, but it is not any more. The artist has created something new from the parts of the original product.

  • No, The Internet Isn't Running Out Of Bandwidth

    Nicholas Overstreet ( profile ), 04 May, 2009 @ 06:13am

IPv6 is not the answer to any imaginary or real IPv4 shortage. The answer is NAT, which is already implemented in nearly every network with internet access.
    Also, the sky is falling.

  • Cop Caught Slamming Cyclist To The Ground On YouTube Indicted

    Re: And you wonder...

So you broke the law... then you're mad you got caught?! Completely insane. People like you are what is wrong with society.
The difference between you and what this article is actually about is that the person in the article didn't do anything wrong other then being in the wrong place at the wrong time (or maybe right since the video camera was rolling), and the officer committing a felony in falsifying his report. It looks like he will actually be brought to justice, which is refreshing as usually those in the good-ole-boys club are above the law most of the time.
