How things are supposed to work and how they actually work in reality sadly always diverge. Judges are people and they will make mistakes like any other human being, the problem is judges who are willfully ignorant, politically motivated or just plain ignore or twist what the law says.
In any case it is unlikely that the judge will face any disciplinary action for ignorance of a law that should be well known.
