Why let people buy a DVD that they can play without a subscription, repeatedly, an unlimited number of times, and even at their friend's house.
They'll undoubtedly quit releasing any new DVDs or Blurays, and probably halt the production of older titles.
We left in late 2022 after 18 years with VZW, but it seems they get one last laugh. $14 and change instead of $100. Oh well, never another penny to them.
It's hardly a bad idea.
First off, I'm not voting for whoever the "lesser evil" is. I'll pass on the vote for evil altogether.
Second, if enough people start voting third party, even if those parties are not real threats themselves, it may force some change in the big two as they try to gather those votes back to themselves.
Third, it's like casting three or four ballots! It's great. Or maybe it's more like Schrödinger's ballot. I cast my ballot for a third ballot, have some people yell at me that it's a vote for the R candidate or D candidate. That's three votes right there, but then we wait for the election. The supporters of whoever loses then get to blame the entire loss on my vote. Shoot, it's a super ballot worth tens or hundreds of thousands of votes!
Anyway, I'll vote third party this year for the third presidential election running. Probably vote for someone with no chance of winning the Senate as well. And I'll feel absolutely fine about it, because I voted my conscience and did my civic duty in casting my ballot.
Instead of a confusing set of folders, it used “labels” which allowed you to include multiple labels on a single piece of email.
If folders are confusing, I'm not sure gmail or labels are going to be much use to that person.
Also, folders are a constant across email providers, so labels could be looked at as a sort of lock-in by Google.
I deleted 14 years of history and use it for view only now. It got banished down the home screen list, and it's still the old Twitter app. If it ever goes to X app required it will be over for good. But my usage is down since the takeover. A few minutes in the morning and that's it.
There's also been a rash of strikes on firearms related videos. It has long been verboten to show weapon manufacturing or building (ie drilling holes, milling parts). They recently started striking a large swath of larger channels retroactively for things such as inserting a magazine, putting on an optic, or screwing a suppressor on, as such activities are now considered 'manufacturing'.
There's a lot of useful content on there, whether reviews or even just cleaning/maintenance (which can effect safety) and it's definitely a concern that it will be lost.
it will continue endlessly until they face consequences like normal people do. How the heck cases like this even get to QI arguments instead of "holy shit lock up the psychos with guns just blasting" is beyond me.
If a regular person just started shooting the way cops do, they would undoubtedly be locked up, if not dead in a hail of bullets when the cops did show up.
The stories of police and their shootings are just a constant "How many of the basic rules of gun safety did they break?"
The four rules:
Treat every firearm as if it's loaded (granted, they assume everyone else's hand, shrub, front door, etc is loaded and threatening, so A+ work here)
Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot (Cops: Always Ready!)
Never aim at anything you don't intend to destroy (watches videos of cops waving guns around for innocent traffic stops, the public daring to talk back, because it's a day ending in -y...)
Know your target and what's behind it (A DOOR WITH A VOICE, BLAST IT!!)
Actually, I guess they follow the(ir) rules.
This kind of incident will continue until there are real consequences.
The appropriate response would be locking up the deputy until his attempted murder trial concludes. Any civil settlement paid from his required liability insurance and/or police pension fund.
Infuriating.
this ballot initiative would require..that all vehicle manufacturers selling new telematics-equipped vehicles...design their systems in such a way that provides owners and third-party repair facilities with access to the vehicle systems through an inter-operable, standardized, and open access telematics platform. The initiative would specifically require that telematics platforms be directly accessible through a mobile-based application, and that this access must include the ability to send commands to in-vehicle components (including, e.g., braking, acceleration, and steering controls). While the initiative requires the system to be “secure,” it does not define what that vague term means, nor does it reflect any established best practices or other measures to address cybersecurity risks.
A car always detectable by an app requiring a short PIN and offering full remote control of vehicle systems could satisfy these requirements.
Well intentioned but incompetent laws are no improvement.
Read about this a little while ago on Ars, and the linked NHTSA letter in that is well worth reading.
It certainly appears that the bill, while seemingly shiny and fresh off the lot, was driven by technologically incompetent lawmakers who closed the hatch on subject matter experts and steered a bill full of vague language that will cross the line in a pileup of unintended consequences.
"It’s possible policymakers could construct another special protection for journalism"
Seems like that should read "for print journalism." Since obviously journalism is not something only done by newspapers, or stodgy Fortune 500 media conglomerate websites. But even by little Wordpress blogs or websites hosted on the 64th floor.
Would be interested in hearing recollections from yourself and others they knew. Keep their memories alive. Not the normal sort of story...but Techdirt isn't a normal site anyway.
(I often just start reading through some of the stories on 9/11...last year, ended up with a new kids book after reading about Roko Camaj.)

Been using the Mosquito Bits/Dunks for a couple years now. They use a bacteria that kills the larvae in the water. Best approach is to get it out there before the first big wave of them hit - less breeding going on the better.
Been using other natural (but effective!) solutions for other pests - milky spore for Japanese beetles (bacteria kills the grubs in the soil), neem oil as a short lived and natural pesticide for aphid control.
Unleashed some monster earthworms here though. Hmmm....
Not just theaters, but physical media is probably gone as well.
Why let people buy a DVD that they can play without a subscription, repeatedly, an unlimited number of times, and even at their friend's house. They'll undoubtedly quit releasing any new DVDs or Blurays, and probably halt the production of older titles.

That map is complete horseshit. That's all.
Other rules being enforced differently as well
