What about an ideal world where there are no guns and everyone is really polite ?
Really, if you're going to start from scratch and build an ideal world, your vision of ideal is pretty grim.

um, and in your little Utopia, would people also not have: knives, baseball bats, axes, saws, ice picks, screwdrivers, cars, etc... In other words, we only have soft fluffy things that can't possibly be used as weapons? I prefer Rose's where you actually do trust everyone or you wouldn't allow them to have a gun.

So, anytime someone files a lawsuit for defamation, they're going to get the "Streisand Effect" and that somehow makes it not worth it? And it's a shame that judges are following the law and allowing discovery to commence is these cases? And, really, you can't see how someone would be better off after going after the defamer?

    Good goodness, you're silly, Mike.

This all coming from someone who is posting anonymously?

Except that there is no proof that the couple actually wrote the negative review. You're saying they need to live with a consequence that wasn't their doing? Sorry, I don't buy that. The hotel, on the other hand, WILL need to live with it.

    Re: Re: Research

People should be accountable for their actions

You say people should be held accountable for their actions, and yet you think the the service provider should be the judge? Seriously?!?

PEOPLE, the ones who are actually producing and providing the illegal content should be held accountable, but not the service provider. If Backpage had been made aware of the material and then did nothing, that would be a different story, but you cannot realistically expect a service provider to audit everything that comes across their pipes. If you do, then you also believe that all phone conversations, emails, txts, SMS, snail mail, UPS, smoke signals, etc...should be monitored for "wrong" (your word) conversations.

You say people should do the right thing, and I don't disagree with that notion, but it's not realistic. Your opinion of right/wrong and mine are probably different. We may agree on some things, but certainly not all. That's precisely why we have a legal system in this country, to define the community standards for what activities are allowed.

  • Don't Be Confused By Amazon's Ebook Sales Claims

    DH's Love Child ( profile ), 21 Sep, 2010 @ 06:46am

    Re:

ebooks will of course far outsell printed books in the very near future

Let me preface this by saying that I am a happy Kindle 3G owner. I don't know if the very near future is accurate.

There are a few things that need to happen to make ebooks gain market share: I think until a common format is embraced by the different vendors, ebook sales won't really take off. It's interesting that the Kindle doesn't support the most popular format, epub, natively and yet sells more books than any other reader.

The price of ebooks has to come down to realistic levels. It is insane that publishers are setting the price of ebooks on the same plane as hardback books. If they were consistently price more like paperbacks, I would buy more books. As it is, I look for legal freebies wherever I can find them (and there are tons of them out there)

The last factor, I think, is that people love their dead tree collections. I love mine. I have some books that are over 100 years old and I have some sheet music that dates back to the 1880's. We have an emotional connection to our books that is hard to overcome. Physical books can be freely given away or borrowed in a way that ebooks cannot come close to.

I think ebooks will eventually represent a significant share of all book sales, but I doubt it will happen for at least 5 years as some of these things get ironed out.

    DH's Love Child ( profile ), 14 Sep, 2010 @ 10:38am

    Re: Long-Term Challenges

If the studios ever decided they wanted a competitor to surpass Netflix, they could probably almost anoint one by making sure that competitor had more desirable streaming content.

Except they tried this with Blockbuster and it failed abysmally.

After cleaning the soda off my LCD, I have to differ with you father. George Carlin described a scenario where AD could be used for an illegal purpose: Grab him by the ankles, swing him around and use him to beat another troll to death.
