  • Copyright Is Indispensable For Artists, They Say; But For All Artists, Or Just Certain Kinds?

Yeah, and I just know that a law like this, that reduces the burden of evidence even further on the claimant will only cause harm in the long run. The US copyright system is already heavily biased in favor of the claimant. Further reducing the burden of evidence like this will only cause harm, and basically make the copyright lawsuits become as commonplace as copyright claims on YouTube. While the inherent racial bias in the current system is a valid problem, lowering the burden of evidence is not a solution.

  • Why Moderating Content Actually Does More To Support The Principles Of Free Speech

    CauseOfBSOD ( profile ), 08 Apr, 2022 @ 09:15am

The only aspect of content moderation, that, in my opinion, if it exists, makes it less supportive of free speech, is if decisions cannot easily be appealed (assuming nobody spams, gets all the content removed, and appeals all of it clogging up the appeals process). Otherwise, content moderation is generally a good thing (and if you don't like the rules, then go somewhere else with rules you agree with).

  • Publishers Seem To Believe Their Outsized Sense Of Entitlement Should Trump Democracy

If I was a company, I wouldn't serve Australia. At all. Even an unrelated service not covered? Gone. It's not worth it, and, its their loss.

And eventually we will get to a point if we so much as say any word, we immediately get sued for intellectual property infringement of some kind. Copyright maximalism is a train wreck that legislators keep rerailing and sending down the same steep hill, and they don't care how much damage it inflicts to the surroundings (and, in fact, itself) as long as it is what the lobbyists tell them (I don't know if this happens in the US, but in the UK it seems like half the incumbent party are being paid by various large companies, which they then lobby for, and then when the standards committee occasionally proposes a relatively minor punishment for a large infraction, they then try and completely change the rules. It's so corrupt) because they get paid extra (assuming it is anything like the situation I described) for it. And people wonder why IDGAF about copyright at times.

  • Cops Are Being ‘Trained’ To Use Literal Witchcraft To Find Dead Bodies

If you are gonna be an idiot, at least don't be an asshole to the person who knows more than you because they corrected you. In fact, don't be an asshole in general. Also, how did this guy not only have such little knowledge of what he was talking about, but also not even bothering to do a cursory check of what he was talking about, in this kind of context?

Science may not be able to tell you what won't work ahead of time every time, but scientific method can show if something like dowsing works or not. It has shown that dowsing, at least with any current or previous method, does not work. While there may be some functional method of dowsing or similar (and I personally think that this is unlikely), we have not been able to find one to my knowledge. In other words, science can't tell you upfront if your fusion reactor design will work, but it can tell you if it didn't work. And as there was a lot of evidence to support the possibility of nuclear energy, we tried it with fission and were successful, and are trying it with fusion, as we know for a fact it is possible (go outside next time you have a sunny day, that sunlight is produced by fusion). We do know we haven't been able to recreate it yet but we don't know whether it is possible to recreate practically on Earth yet. Dowsing, on the other hand, does not even have any reliable evidence to support its possibility, and every scientific study where there wasn't a conflict of interest has shown it does not work, and the lack of any evidence to suggest it is possible suggests that it is impossible, and can be ruled out until evidence suggests it may be possible. Also, if you want to find a functional method of dowsing, go ahead, but don't expect much funding without evidence. I would instead work on practical nuclear fusion (Not the type that tweenagers do for a science fair because it is possible, but the type which gives a net gain of energy or otherwise gives us some benefit), then once we have halted global heating, war, and have fixed all the other issues we've created, then I absolutely won't stop you trying to get dowsing to actually work. But for now, we not only have no evidence it will even work, but we also don't have the time and resources to sink into what is effectively searching for a needle in a haystack of unknown size, where the needle may or may not exist, and there may be any number of needles. You might find it tomorrow, you might find it in a few decades, you might never find it. With nuclear power, we at least know that there is at least one needle, and, the more people search for it (in the case of practical fusion) the faster it will be found.

  • Bungie Sues Does Over ‘Destiny’ DMCA Takedowns, Slams YouTube’s DMCA Process

    CauseOfBSOD ( profile ), 08 Apr, 2022 @ 08:22am

Hmmmmm, good idea Would be funny to see any prolific abuser of the DMCA or similar to be hit hard with whatever law they abused Even better if it negatively affects those who lobbied for said law and/or those who voted it in and/or anyone who might actually be able to get them significantly weakened or even removed. Bonus points if it affects Big Media

    fonts similar eh?

So when does someone designing a vaguely similar font then sue anyone involved over "copyright infringement"?

So basically like a DoS attack, but its done by one person, doesn't use computers, and is completely legal (and carries more repercussions). Would be funny to see someone use this law against whichever idiot thought it would be a good idea to create it, but sadly, there's that exemption.

    youtube

And Youtube already has not only a separate platform for children (which I am informed is worse than the adult version) but they also have a version of the adult version where content is arbitrarily (and I MEAN arbitrarily - like think Content ID but 10 times worse) blocked, comments cannot be left or viewed, and is in general a frustrating and bad experience. Not to mention Youtube requires all content to be "kid-friendly" (i.e. advertiser friendly). And yet I get ads that are pretty NSFW.
