I was talking to the Anonymous Coward behind you.
LLM sounds like a three-letter abbreviation the magavolk should be declaring war on.
A defeatist was an idealist who realized too late that the odds favored the house.
India and Pakistan did that during the partition. Millions died or were displaced. And blue states and red states will spend generations wanting to nuke each other out of existence.
Sadly, at this point Trump pretty much needs to just declare himself president for life. Because America only exists to let him get away with everything, and he has so far, so it follows that he must get away with everything in the future as well.
Broadly, Trump is helping to realize totalitarianism by using government to create reality. Trump weaponizing CISA to chase election conspiracies isn't about finding facts, it's about Trump's psychological need to be vindicated to order a government bureaucracy to give life to his lies. Not to mention the rush he gets from seeing others obey him. It starts with CISA. Then comes the Little Berias who when you give them a man they will give you their crime. From then on, a culture that believes nothing is true and everything is possible will come naturally.
Flooding the zone with shit leads us into the same dystopian predicament as mass censorship. We can worship at the altar of free speech all we want, but what happens when we have more speech than we know what to do with but can't think our way out of problems, learn nothing from our mistakes, and preoccupy our minds with repetition of worn ideas rather than curiosity?
Not necessarily. Sometimes the worst teachers do a better job of teaching than the worst students do of learning. Teachers generally have to go through at least four years of education, have to get a license, continue professional development throughout their careers, and then have to have the personal skills to manage a classroom of randomly assigned children of unknown abilities and personalities. Any man and woman can fuck, then nine months later create a child of unknown ability and personality, and for about 13 years outsource their offspring's intellectual development to said teacher. There's a limit to what teachers and education are willing and able to do because they aren't able to eradicate poverty or undo the effects of bad parenting or bad culture.
Author and coiner of the word "enshittification" Cory Doctorow made a prediction about AI, and warned us that we have our eyes trained on the wrong danger. It's highly unlikely that any AI will take our jobs. This is what the public fears. There's an infinitesimal chance of this happening. The more probable danger is that your boss or the C-suite will believe the sales pitch that AI will take our jobs and choose to eliminate those jobs. The paradox is that the decision makers in any organization are the least capable of understanding AI's strengths and weaknesses, yet will nonetheless make the call on the AI switch and blow the call.
High praise indeed.
Looks like they are speedrunning Orwell's "1984".
I'd settle for Howard Hughes -- let him grow old and disheveled in a hotel room with urine kept in jars.
In this thread in a post called "The Starter Wife", I linked to a Marie Claire article interviewing Elmo's first wife. She has five children with him; their first son died of SIDS shortly after he was born. He runs his households just like the startups he is involved in. The timeline of their marriage was 2000 to 2008, and "loves the sense of power he gets from being able to inflict suffering on others" is a good way to describe him from his ex-wife's POV.
“twitter didn’t fall over and sink into the swamp”No, that would be the Cybertruck.
The Objectivity Model's design flaws have a longer history than the modern Republican Party turning their backs on facts and reality. Before Trump, and before the Tea Party, you still had what passes for the American left and right trying to out-truth each other with barrages of fact and argumentation. Even when both sides have a shared sense of fair and foul play, the Objectivity Model is conceited and creates paradoxes and contradictions even when the basic facts are not at issue. These flaws have been known going all the way back to Walter Lippmann and John Dewey in the 1920s, as well as subsequent critiques to their debate. Problems with the Objectivity Model: 1. The audience comes away with a sense of false balance (that the facts and arguments of both sides are of equal quality, and the narrative's subjects are of equal standing 2. The inability of journalists and editors to tell three or more sides of a story (the convention is to leave this kind of narrative to academics and intellectuals, while journalism will try to force the multiple sides into the two frames and treat it as controversy) 3. Setting two frames at odds exaggerates conflict between subjects 4. Journalism rewards media manipulators and savvy subjects with coverage (subjects who master the communication art of "concision", subjects who promptly reply to requests for comment, sources who spoonfeed journalists with quotes and shareable content, etc.) 5. The notion of objectivity itself; facts don't exist in a pure, angelic state and require a context to be understood but the fact-and-context relationship is inherently biased
As soon as they have an opportunity to hurt or kill someone with impunity, they will.Daniel Jonah Goldhagen argues this in his books about genocide. Permission from the state and a society's elites will flip the switch to evil mode in society.
Once flooded with shit, the zone can't be unflooded.
I'm not so sure it's billionaire greed. The Cruelty is the Point is more likely true. Musk is indifferent to or might actively enjoy the cruelty he inflicts.
I also recall how a few years ago, right-wingers complained about Twitter’s rules regarding misinformation,They always work the refs.
@AC Feb. 20, 2025 at 6:10 pm, you proved my last sentence.
