Freedom Of The Press Foundation Raising Money To Support Encryption Tools

from the support-is-good dept

Over the last year, the Freedom of the Press Foundation raised nearly half a million dollars to support important threatened journalism efforts. Over the past few months the Foundation has continued to build on its efforts, such as by taking over the SecureDrop project to make it easier for journalism operations to setup a system to get information securely and anonymously from whistleblowers. The Foundation has now kicked off its latest crowdfunding campaign, focused on supporting a series of encryption tools, including Tor, Tails, Open WhisperSystems and the LEAP Encryption Access Projects. Oh yeah, and its own continued work on SecureDrop. It's a good cause. While they focus on how these encryption tools are for journalists, that's underplaying things. These are tools for everyone.

While I think the Open Whisper System apps mean well and work, they do not distribute them anywhere other than the proprietary Google Play store. The apps themselves are open-source, so one could build them themselves, but they are dependent on the Google services framework and will not function without Gapps installed.

and by God we need them! no one should have the right to listen to conversations or read messages without having specific, valid evidence that the person(s) concerned is suspected of or known to have committed a serious crime!

You don't use encryption if you have nothing to hide!

    Encryption tools are munitions

... according to some export regulations.

So access to good encryption tools is a clear 2nd amendment right, when the tyrannical government is armed with the NSA.
