Canadian Heritage Minister Denies Calling His Critics On Copyright Bill 'Extreme Radicals'; Video Proves He Said It

from the deny-deny-deny dept

The recent story about Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore lashing out at his critics over the Canadian version of the DMCA (C-32) and calling them "radical extremists" has been getting an awful lot of attention, including condemnation from other elected officials. However, Moore's response has been anything but comforting. He apparently denied saying those words in a correspondence with Michael Geist, but it didn't take long for some video to surface that not only shows him saying that, but many other nasty things about anyone who dares criticize the bill:
He clearly says "the only groups opposed to this are really two groups of radical extremists." Later on he refers to complaints about the bill -- which are coming from thousands of concerned Canadian content creators and citizens -- as being "babyish."

Those who complain about a lack of IP are the only babyish ones here. They want the government to hold their hands with legislative subsidies, like babies, because they can't compete in a free market.

    Banned

I @'d him (just once) on Twitter to complain about the C-32 digital locks criminalising kids transferring (legally owned) DVD's to iPods etc. He DM'd me with one word - "ridiculous" - and then blocked me.

He likes to model himself as tech savvy - which to him means tweeting about the latest Apple product he's acquired - but it's bizarre how he's really screwed up his social media usage. Stephen Harper has a reputation for keeping his ministers on a tight leash - I'm sure he's not happy with the way James Moore is handling this situation right now.

This guy is an idiot. Now I'm not calling him an idiot or anything but he shouldn't say something and subsequently deny it.

it must be wednesday at techdirt, because here's yet another story short on facts. i mean, seriously? moore says something in a private email and you use it to expose him for the complete liar he is? sort of a gotya moment, isn't it? and did you even get him? all you did was find evidence that completely contradicts wht he said in a private email. score another point for techdirts invasion of privacy and raporism.

Well, they have to first pass a bill to allocate themselves a raise for their willingness to do all that extra hard work.

    Re:

I find it funny that he complains about people constantly cited by the media who don't actually know what they're talking about. That sounds more like the pro-copyright crowd. And he kept saying there are all these people who claim to be in favor of copyright reform but really aren't. Hello? They are in favor of copyright reform all right, just not in the direction YOU want.

Then he goes off about trade, jobs, and foreign investment, and I'm thinking, does anybody actually buy this crap?

Oh, you must mean the levy we pay because Canadians might use tape(!!!), CDs, DVDs, hard drives etc to copy and hand out vast amounts of Canadian music which, according to the CBC is limited to only The Tragically Hip unto whom they worship.

Oh yes, and that total waste of money known as the Canada Council.

It protects lawyers jobs in Toronto and the jobs of Toronto based "entertainment" execs.

Let us not forget that there IS no Canada outside of the GTA. Places like Calgary, Regina, Montreal, Halifax, Vancouver and St Johns are figments of fevered imagining and are not real.

Gawd, man! It seems to me that you must be trying to set the record for the most anti-blog author posts in history here. You've claimed in the past to have a job in IT, and yet you seem to spend an inordinate of time posting here, which would lead one to believe that you can't possibly be spending much time at work, or you're just completely full of crap. When you finally have a point, please make it. Until then, just STFU, you wanking git.

    Love,

    Your Daddy

no subject given, no quarter taken

a wise man once said, "I reject your reality and substitute my own." And it occurred under similar circumstances of "No, I didn't say that," and the show editor cutting to the clip of him saying just that.
