How Wireless Is Changing Campus
from the wireless-booty-call dept
There have been plenty of articles about universities setting up wireless networks to cover their campus. However, Wired now has an article looking at how a completely wireless campus has changed university life. It goes well beyond just letting people check their email from anywhere. Professors do more interesting things in classes. Students are writing all sorts of new and creative applications that make use of the wireless networks (such as a VoIP application that people can use to make phone calls instead of mobile phones or a program that determines how far away you are from your next appointment in order to set an alarm with the proper amount of warning time). The article suggests what a more wireless future might look like if WiFi coverage ever expands to more than just hotspots. Also, it’s interesting to note that companies, like Cisco, donated much of the equipment for the network in order to learn from how the students used it (and, of course, to get them hooked on wireless).
