Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt
from the as-you-say dept
This week, our first place winner on the insightful side is a simple anonymous comment about the fact that 41% of Americans now live under age verification laws:
Such “small government”
In second place, it’s That One Guy with a comment about the hypocrisy of the right:
You can set your watch by the consistent reliability of conservatives going from vilifying and accusing the Others of the most heinous crimes and motivations imaginable while calling any attempts to work together treason and anti-american to calling for ‘co-operation’ and ‘forgiveness’ the second they achieve any sort of power and need the other side to either work with or at least not against them.
For editor’s choice on the insightful side, we start out with a comment from jimb about a specific type of right wing hypocrisy, i.e. that which comes from Elon Musk:
Poor Elon, he’s just so misunderstood. When he said he was a “free speech absolutist”, he didn’t mean your free speech. Just his. You can say anything you want… as long as you agree with him.
Elon may or may not be a “free speech absolutist” – but he is absolutely a hypocrite.
Next, it’s Thad with a comment about the wishful notion that recent tensions could spell the end of the modern GOP:
People have been predicting the collapse of the GOP since 2008. It’s proven remarkably resilient.
Yes, the racists who want to keep POC out are fighting with the racists who want to exploit them for cheap labor again. But come election time, they usually manage to set their differences aside and celebrate the racism they have in common.
Over on the funny side, our first place winner is blakestacey with a comment on our post about Elon Musk threatening to sue over factual news headlines:
The replies to posts about Musk suggest that we need a “flag for bootlicking” option.
In second place, its another comment from a thread about Elon Musk, this time supposedly from (heh) “Adrian Dittman”:
I agree with Matthew M Bennett, and would like to add that Elon is a good father.
For editor’s choice on the funny side, we start out with a comment from That One Guy about Musk suspending accounts on ExTwitter and asking people to be nicer:
I am shocked, shocked I say
MAGAts on Twitter: But I’m a member in good standing of the Leopards Eating Peoples Faces party, why is my face on the menu?!
Finally, it’s an anonymous comment about the federal court striking down a book ban law in Arkansas:
The Supreme Court: “Hold our beer.”
Brett Kavanaugh: “Like hell I’m giving up my beer!”
That’s all for this week, folks!

Still thinking about the NSA story, and it’s amazing that in the US a single fat lech like Harvey Weinstein chasing after degenerate actresses can cause a decade long moral panic, but an epidemic of thousands of schoolgirl rapes in the UK can be dismissed as ‘unfortunate’ but NBD.
Re:
False dilemma. Both can be concerning, much like your use of the term “degenerate.”

Re: Re:
Fair enough. One question I have [tho]:
Is the animated revisitation of the grooming gangs intended to inform the political elite regarding their malfeasance?
Or to discredit and disparage the elite?
It seems like Americans generally feel much more entitled to the latter than the British.

Jesse, what the fuck are you talking about

Re: Re: Re:2
I don’t know who Jesse is, Stephen, but I have another question:
Is it possible that the years of Jan 6 hysteria backfired on media libs?
Did Jan 6 end up seeming like a fun party to the modal American?
Especially when it was clear that so many libs loved being shut in for 2 years during COVID? 🤔

Re: Re: Re:4
Just how British culture is basically the water that those of us living in modernity swim in.
It doesn’t ‘need’ anything admixed.
If you are allowed to enter British culture it should be understood as a great privilege.

Re: Re: Re:6
Well, it’s amazing to me that the British political leadership class is so scoldy, officious, and pedantic.
Let’s look at their accomplishments:
NHS is a disaster.
Sclerotic economic growth with most of the country poorer than Mississippi.
Lots and lots of rape gangs that political leaders pretend don’t exist.
Unlimited immigration of low skilled, culturally incompatible immigrants.
No wonder UK political elites are terrified of social media and sic the police on Boomers who do bad Facebook poasts.
The whole thing’s a tinder box and could go any time, Stephen.

Re: Re: Re:8
Totally OT, I know (sorry), but…has the rate of murders committed by ‘females’ increased because more men are being counted as women and more women are taking testosterone?
Interesting epidemiological question.
Re: Re: Re:9
That’s not an interesting question, you’re just high on crushed up drywall.
Re: Re: Re:9
Except it’s not. It has nothing to do with Epidemiology.
Also, The logic is self-conflicting.
Re: Re: Re:5
“If you are allowed to enter British culture it should be understood as a great privilege.”
It’s a privilege for you Brits that anyone wants to be involved in your ‘culture’.
Re: Re: Re:6
Every accusation a blinding projection. There’s a reason you guys still speak English, you know.
Re: Re: Re:7
Because the US never got conquered. What’s your point?
Re: Re: Re:8
You missed it. It went *whoooooooooooosh!* as it passed high over your head before falling into my hands.
Re: Re: Re:9
Whoooshing yourself? That’s funny. You miss the point and pretend you know what you’re talking about.
Re: Re: Re:3 Oh oh oh my turn!
Do you think the current storm is caused by the grey/reptilian saucer-men or do you think that the Mole people have captured a HAARP\COBRA Weather Dominator from the reverse vampires at the RAND corporation?
Re: Re: Re:
Only if the existential pataphor is shoved into the lower right quadrant of the superpositional counterintuition, but also only if that occurs during psychotomimetic callipygian fever dreams.
They do that to themselves by their very existence. Also, they’re not elite. They’re parasites.
Re: Re: Re:2
Okay, who left the door to the Time Cube open again?
Re:
It’s similarly amazing that the mere existence of trans people causes people to lose their fucking minds and all but demand a trans genocide, but the systemic cover-up of child rape that occured in numerous Christian churches across the country over a period of decades is largely treated as a “no need to look at how religious institutions normalized this abuse” situation.

Re: Re:
Didn’t you post an interesting comment a few months ago about the demonization of video games (re. violence)?
I don’t care if my kids are watching something violent or with course language or adult themes.
However, if they’re watching something with poor or distasteful aesthetics I yell at them to immediately turn it off.
Re: Re: Re:
*If they’re watching a cartoon and there’s an obese character in a wheelchair, ‘SHUT IT OFF!!!!’
Re: Re: Re:
I don’t see what any of that has to do with my comment.
Re: Re:
Typical liberal exaggeration. Most rapists will be perfectly fine with caesarean section for the delivery of their loins’ fruit.
Re: Re: Re:
TIL: Birth via C-section is not birth.
Re: Re: Re:2
Old news.
MACBETH
Thou losest labour:
As easy mayst thou the intrenchant air
With thy keen sword impress as make me bleed:
Let fall thy blade on vulnerable crests;
I bear a charmed life, which must not yield,
To one of woman born.
MACDUFF
Despair thy charm;
And let the angel whom thou still hast served
Tell thee, Macduff was from his mother’s womb
Untimely ripp’d.
Re: Re: Re:3
Despite how famous that particular author is, his opinion is still just an opinion and not one that is shared by any modern doctor or scientist.
Re: Re: Re:4
Since when do modern doctors or science have anything to do with Alabama laws? If anything, Shakespeare is already too progressive there with pieces like “Othello”.

Stop moving the goalposts, troll.

Re: Re:
Not every pedophile is a transphobe, but transphobes sure have a creepy obsession with childrens’ genitals.
Transphobes’ accusations are confessions.
Re: Re: Re:
There’s a reason when talking about anti-trans bigots I tend to include terms like ‘pervert’ and ‘sexual deviant’ in the description of them…
Re:
an epidemic of thousands of schoolgirl rapes in your imagination more like
So is it “your body, my choice” or not? Pussy grabbers suddenly bad?
Re:
Yo bro Ima need your Citation, Footnote, or Reference for that claim. No one’s made up bullshit rides for free.
Re:
Classy little diversion into victim blaming you took there.
Has Leon been posting here?
This smells like Leon.
