This Week In Techdirt History: September 15th – 21st

from the as-it-was dept

Five Years Ago

This week in 2019, some investors were getting sick of AT&T’s obsession with mergers, leading the company to think about dumping DirecTV. Nintendo was ramping up its war on ROM websites, while Congress was moving forward with plans to massively increase copyright trolling. The DOJ helped boost Ed Snowden’s memoir by suing him for not running it by the CIA and NSA, and Ro Khanna was working on a bill to study the impact of FOSTA on sex workers. We were surprised when Josh Hawley, in an interview, directly responded to Techdirt’s criticism of his plans for the internet. And, this was the week that MoviePass officially shut down.

Ten Years Ago

This week in 2014, we wrote about how copyright’s effectiveness as a censorship tool makes it so tempting to use that way, while a new study confirmed that the internet had contributed to massive profit levels in the legacy entertainment industry. Meanwhile, an IP lobbying group was pushing for a version of SOPA focused on trademark, Australia was hosting a forum about online infringement, and the Conan Doyle estate was asking the Supreme Court to put Sherlock Holmes back under copyright. Meanwhile, John Brennan was refusing to tell the Senate who okayed the CIA spying on the Senate, and the DOJ was seeking the ability for the FBI to hack into computers overseas with little oversight.

Fifteen Years Ago

This week in 2009, we looked at even more copyright propaganda pushed on school children, which seems to never run out, and asked why content creators get control over derivative works. Joe Satriani and Coldplay settled their lawsuit over a melody, while a judge tossed out Universal Music’s lawsuit against Veoh. ASCAP and BMI were demanding payment for 30 second previews of songs on web stores, there were pushes to put DRM on televisions in both the US and the UK, and the movie industry was continuing to pointlessly attack fansub communities, while content owners were forcing Hulu to make its app less useful and appealing.

Re: Re: Re:5

Except biological sex is determined by chromosomal makeup and there’s more than two chromosomal makeups so there are more than two biological sexes. Your binary perspective of sex is a specific cultural bias, not a scientific observation of the nature of biological sex. You’re just as bad as people who look to the bible for science. You’re working from bias to draw a conclusion that doesn’t match the evidence. If you define sex as binary because you arbitrarily exclude other chromosomal makeups, then we can just as arbitrarily define sex as singular and say only intersex is an actual sex or only female is the only actual sex. If you’re just going to make shit up, you can’t claim authority on a topic.

Re: Re: Re:9 If you must know…

I believe in safety. I use the men’s locker room at my gym, because I physically resemble a cis man more. Once I more physically resemble a cis woman, then I will use the women’s locker room, because in all likelihood women won’t feel unsafe with me there.

If you cared about safety, you would do would I would do as well if you were in my position.

Like most conservatives, the asshole to whom you’re replying doesn’t believe in social safety from the standpoint of “I’ll do what I can to help others feel safe without trying to make anyone feel unnecessarily unsafe”. They believe in safety from the standpoint of “I must make myself feel safe no matter who else feels unsafe”. The primary vice of conservatism is selfishness; if you’re not thinking of yourself first and foremost at all times, you’re not a conservative.

Re: Re: Re:12

And yet, you give not a single damn about the violence that could be (and has been) visited upon trans people. For people like you, it’s never “make others feel safe with minimal collateral damage”—it’s always “I must feel safe regardless of who else feels unsafe”.

Conservatism revels in the vice of selfishness. You haven’t proven me wrong.

Good, Hyman.

Now get the fuck out of the kitchen.

That’s now a “sex-segregated space” meant for “biological women” according to you.

And while we’re at it, let’s designate some parks for “biological women” as well. As well as all “women’s health clinics”. Oh, and supermarkets as well.

Being around the general vicinity of these places meant for “biological women” means you would be arrested and jailed without trial, just as you wanted it.

Don’t thank me Hyman, it’s your idea, after all.

Re: Re: Re:14

Why would I, a biological male, want to enter a “women’s health clinic”?

Maybe you have a female relative who can’t make it to the clinic to pick up important papers or medications. She’s asked you to pick them up for her because she trusts you and you’re the only option she has. Under your logic, you wouldn’t be able to enter the clinic to pick those things up for her because, as “a biological male”, you wouldn’t have the right to even step on the premises.

You are driven by a desire to troll people for the tiny dopamine rush you get from someone calling you out on being a piece of shit who says outlandish things just because you can. Seek professional help as soon as humanly possible, son.

Re: Re: Re:16

You care less about women and girls than you do about hurting trans people out of either irrational hatred or a genuine psychopathic enjoyment of violence against marginalized people. Hell, I’m pretty sure you’re the guy who openly and proudly professed to believe that a 12-year-old incestual rape survivor should be murdered if she aborts the pregnancy caused by that rape.

MrWilson (profile) says:

Re: Re: Re:16

And this is where your lack of education is egregious.

Statistically, you are the greater threat to women than trans people are! You’re fighting shadows while ignoring that you likely have made women feel more uncomfortable and threatened than any trans person has. You are more likely to sexually assault a woman. You are more likely to be violent with her.

So now you’re victimizing trans people when you should be checking yourself.

Re: Re: Re:10

It’s good that you at least admit that your illness includes the narcissistic belief that you have a right to infiltrate and corrupt women’s single-sex spaces, which would turn them into mixed-sex spaces and undermine the safety, privacy, and dignity of women and girls (something you’ll never, ever be, because you’re a biological male).

Re: Re: Re:7

Hey buddy, I get it. It’s annoying to have to learn new things or find out that the basic science you learned when you were a kid wasn’t necessarily the full story because humanity’s understanding of the natural world changes over time with new developments like electron microscopes and new studies that don’t suffer from historical cultural or religious biases. Feeling like your knowledge is obsolete can be a bummer, so it’s natural to want to dig your heels in and insist you don’t need to learn anything new because the basic information you learned when you were young will always be true. But gosh darnit, this is a brave new world you’re living in. Keep hanging in there, slugger. You might realize learning new stuff is fun and maybe not hating people for things that aren’t your business or within your limited realm of understanding can be a good course of action in life!

Re:

Some say that we should counter bad speech with more speech. Every time people like spew your bad speech someone will counter it with more speech.

That people like you mostly existed as silent cowards until quite recently is why there weren’t a need to write anything about how your kind harass, physically assault, de-humanize and in other ways decided that some people shouldn’t exist.

At least we know that you will die angry and alone.

And unsurprisingly, antidirt/average_joe was frantically bending over backwards to simultaneously say “Yes, copyright absolutely allows us to do so” and “You shouldn’t be allowed to point it out and get angry about it, because you’re all pirates”.

Fast forward to today, and the censorship is still around – but not antidirt. I like to think someone filed a copyright notice against his existence, and ever the compliant little IP lickspittle, he notice and staydowned himself.
