Techdirt Podcast Episode 382: Checking In On Bluesky With Jay Graber
from the protocols-not-platforms dept
Anyone who follows Techdirt knows we’re very interested in the progress of Bluesky, the decentralized social network that embraces our concept of protocols over platforms. Bluesky recently ended its invite-only beta and opened its doors to the public, so it seems like a great time for a check-in, and who better to check in with than Bluesky CEO Jay Graber? Jay joins us on this week’s episode for a discussion about Bluesky’s progress and what the future holds.

I have never been on twitter, but this podcast convinced me to check out bluesky. I don’t think I’ve been excited for a protocol for quite some time.
This core vision that Jay mentions about the freedom to build is a stark contrast to an age where every other platform is ever more locked down.
One point of note though: the reason that many platforms are locked down is also ostensibly because of security. Giving users the ability to program has always been a headache, and so most platforms don’t bother. This feels like the days of the early web, before mass spam and other ways that malicious actors have found to make money by making other people miserable. I think it’s still a tossup to see if bluesky can survive once its out of its honeymoon phase, but I’m hoping that it does.
