The first laser was made in 1960, and since then, lasers have become increasingly useful — by delivering information through fiber optic cables and in LASIK and other ablative cutting processes. What would we do without lasers? It’s possible that lasers could solve all of our energy needs if inertial confinement fusion ever pans out. Laser weapons will have a disadvantaged against traditional heavy metal weapons for a very long time, simply because there is always the problem with providing them with power, and the fact that they need to be ‘attached’ to the area of operation. The failure of the airborne lasers in the Star Wars program was an obvious sign of just how precarious sci-fi tech really is.
