Glenn Beck Didn't Rape And Murder Anyone… But He Doesn't Want Websites Discussing It

from the well,-this-should-be-fun dept

Ok, first off, I’ll say this: I don’t watch 24-hour cable news shows. In the rare moments when I catch any of the talking heads for any of those networks (CNN, Fox News, MSNBC), it makes me somewhat crazy, because none of them seem to have the slightest common sense. Frankly, they’re all just a bunch of entertainers who appear to either be completely clueless, or exaggerate and lie for effect. I have little time for such people — no matter what ideological bent they happen to come from. One of the popular tactics of such shows, is to use the ever popular “report on a rumor” setup, which lets them insinuate something, without ever officially stepping up and saying it themselves. The simplest form is the “some are saying…” lead in that lets these folks spend plenty of time discussing things without ever actually investigating if they’re true. But, at times it goes much deeper into finding some random conspiracy theorist, and building them up into a “movement.” It seems to happen pretty regularly, and it’s rather silly.

In the last couple of weeks, a random internet meme apparently sprung up to highlight this sort of reporting, initiated in a comment on the ever-excellent Fark, it involved a commenter questioning: “Why haven’t we had an official response to the rumor that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a girl in 1990?” The idea, which seems plain to many involved, is not to actually suggest that Glenn Beck did such a thing — but to highlight this tactic of making a totally bogus rumor into “news” by stating it, and wondering why there hasn’t been a denial. A bunch of folks have picked up on this claim and run with it (apparently greatly upsetting some loyal Beck fans), turning it into one of those internet memes with legs.

Someone — quite anonymous — then set up a website to chronicle all of this, called (appropriately, given the meme): GlennBeckRapedAndMurderedAYoungGirlIn1990.com. The site itself is clear that it’s a parody, attempting to highlight this sort of “news” tactic, and the fact that it’s often employed by Beck:

This site is parody/satire. We assume Glenn Beck did not rape and murder a young girl in 1990, although we haven’t yet seen proof that he didn’t. But we think Glenn Beck definitely uses tactics like this to spread lies and misinformation.

It turns out that Glenn Beck isn’t happy about this either. He’s filed a domain name dispute over the domain name, claiming that it violates his trademark:

Now, you might see some sort of claim over defamation (but, even that seems iffy, given that it’s clearly a parody), but a trademark claim seems really iffy — and not particularly smart. First, the site in question doesn’t have any commerce. It does link to another site that sells stuff, which is how Beck tries to claim that it’s a commercial site. For a trademark violation to occur, the name needs to be used in commerce. It’s also supposed to be confusing — but as plenty of “gripes sites” have shown, it’s perfectly reasonable to use a trademarked term in a domain name (and, hell, Beck’s name isn’t even fully registered yet) as a part of a gripe/protest/parody, when it’s clearly not run by the actual mark holder.

As for why it’s not particularly smart — whether he wins or loses — is because he just called a whole bunch of attention to some silly internet meme that clearly wants attention. Beck would have been better off just ignoring it. Instead, in legitimizing it by trying to take it down, many more people become aware of the meme — and may start calling attention to situations where Beck (and others) make use of such tactics.

Re: Re: ok.. clue me in..

Last time I checked, the only persons attending his comedy tours were people who wanted to see him enough to pay for it. WTF is WRONG with you people? Never had a wife? Child? Have to explain that people are so seething with hatred for anyone who dares express a different opinion that you’ll make a joke out of rape and murder (when did Karl Rove ever stoop that low?) I originally switched party affiliation to vote in the primary to stop Reagan from getting the nomination, but the Crats have managed to embarrass themselves so much since, I never came back.

Paedophilia is the correct spelling of the psychosis. Aperson is a pedophile. Before you try to belittle someone to make yourself feel better all I ask is for you to think Twice and maybe just check facts.

Glenn Beck

Glenn Beck makes a living doing exactly what this parody website does-just without the disclaimer that would indicate he is lying through his teeth. And honestly, as much as I appreciate a sensitive guy Glenn Beck is the biggest wussie I have ever seen, weeping and sniveling at the drop of a hat. I don’t understand what all the “men’s men” in the GOP see in him unless they see him as a softer alternative to we hard hearted feminists. Well, to each their own. He makes my skin crawl….ewwww.

DJ (profile) says:

Re: Glenn Beck

If by “weeeping and sniveling”, you mean encouraging Americans to think for themselves (regardless of his tactics) instead of blindly and stupidly following the rest of the herd, then I guess you’re right.

If by “weeping and sniveling” you mean ACTUALLY weeping and sniveling then two things are clearly true: 1)you’ve never watched or listened to his show, AND 2)you’re just a designated blog-watcher whose sole job it is to bash people who disagree with the democratic agenda.

DJ (profile) says:

Re: Re: Re: Glenn Beck

weeping. verb. expressing grief, sorrow, or any overwhelming emotion by shedding tears:

Nope he never does that.

Sniveling. verb. 1. to weep or cry with sniffling.
2. to affect a tearful state;

Nope he never does that.

And yes there’s a need to get defensive here, because there’s very little truth on this particular page. Unless, of course, you count the irony that this entire story is decrying the use of unsubstantiated information to incite viewers/listeners/readers…That’s exactly what Mike has done here.

DJ (profile) says:

Re: Re: Re:3 Glenn Beck

I call that a reason to retract the word “never” and replace it with “TWICE”. TWICE! How many shows has he done? I can’t view the video clips at work, but one of those images doesn’t even look like it’s his show, but I’ll stick with twice. Yep, he cried on air twice. What a big crybaby. He has no control over his emotions.

Even you “manly men” out there I guarantee have cried more than twice in your adult life. Criticizing someone for doing something you also do has a term: hypocrisy.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: Re: Re:4 Glenn Beck

Tom Browkaw never cried on air that I can find. Dan Rather? Not that I’ve ever heard of. Walter Kronkite? Maybe tears of joy and wonder during the moon landing, or perhaps a tear, or maybe two of sadness after the JFK assassination.

But, Beck isn’t a Browkaw, a Rather or a Kronkite. He isn’t even a Jon Stewart (who did get weepy after 9/11, but at other times? Over a regular story of his own creation?). And his stories aren’t of the magnitude of a moon landing, or a presidential assassination, or a 9/11.

Eddie says:

How can someone who follows this assclown not realize that he cries and moans like a bitch all the time.
And he most certainly does not encourage people to think for themselves, he encourages them to blindly repeat his cockamamie ideas verbatim at all times. If they thought for themselves and did the most rudimentary research, they would see him for the lying, whiny jackass he is.

Oh! so THAT’S what he means when I says to decide for ourselves! golly I could’ve sworn that when someone says “I’m just asking the questions. You can answer them for yourself”, that that’s exactly what they mean. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Oh yeah, that also means that if I interpret what everyone says as the exact opposite of what they really mean, then you are clearly a staunch Glenn Beck supporter.

As Jon Stewart (EW LIBERAL!!) rephrased it, “I’m not saying your mother is a whore, I’m JUST ASKING. Reasonable people just want to know if YOUR MOTHER IS A WHORE.” They (lots of these people, not just Beck) hide behind the question mark so they can say any crazy thing they want.

Use your head. It’s not about left vs. right or us vs. them, it’s about thinking vs. idiocy. Pick which side you want to be on; if you want to be a thoughtful conservative, that’s great. In that case you probably will want to have nothing to do with the likes of Glenn Beck. OTOH if you’re picking the idiocy side… then I’m wasting my time.

I’m all for you defending him and saying he isn’t a crybaby, thats fine. But seriously… his show is completely devoid of intelligence. He contradicts himself all the time. “He has a deep seated hatred for the white man.” “I never said he didn’t like white men.” Seriously? (while I used quotes, I’m not quite sure if those are the *exact* words, but its extremely close and not taken out of context either.)

er, Ryebread you make the comment that “Fox News viewers aren’t that bright”… do you have any information whatsoever to back that up? Any REAL statistical data from viewer surveys?

If not, then you’re just another self-important, hypocritical, jack-ass libtard spewing non-factual “data”…

If you want to tune into a network that truly DOES make stuff up, may I suggest you tune to CBS News? After all, it was CBS News that knowingly reported on documents that their editor KNEW were bogus when the story went on the air.

Otherwise, just STFU & spare the rest of us from your sophomoric rants

I can’t think of a single over-the-air or cable network that isn’t leaning to the extreme left or right. Even WWW news sites are hard to pick through. Crazily enough, when it comes to general news Xinhua and Aljazeera have a more balanced editorial policy than most US/Western organizations. Thats pretty sad.

Sitting here, a few miles away from the Edward R. Murrow School of Journalism, I could not agree more. I’m sure he’s spinning in his grave. You make an important point – this isn’t just about Glenn Beck, it’s about the poor state of the “media”.

No longer do we have trusted voices, reporting just the facts and letting us come up with our own opinions. We have professional spinners, using tactics like those we’re mocking, who influence the debate and public opinion far more than they should. And they pass it off as news. That’s sad. We’ve become a nation of sheep, and it’s a damn shame.

While Glenn Beck may be the target of this, I hope it opens a few people’s eyes. It’s not just Beck, it’s a whole lot of people in the media who employ these tactics. Beck is just an easy target, and one who’s very fun to screw with.

Note that if Glen Beck is dragged into making a statement denying “he raped and murdered a young girl in 1990”, it will quickly be pointed out that

  • he didn’t deny it happened in 1991 or 1989;
  • he didn’t deny it was an older girl;
  • (my favorite) he didn’t deny he raped OR murdered a young girl, only that he didn’t do both.

I love that he can’t win for denying and he can’t win for not denying. This is *so* Karl Rove.

except that Karl Rove was never a news commentator. As a political strategist, he was expected to pull such maneuvers, and did so with willful gusto. No less offensive than many pulled by the machinators on the other side have done too often to count.

I have to agree with the general jist of our topic at hand here- just not with comparing news commentators, anchors or any other “journalist” to a politico who was never one of those things and never represented himself as such. Karl would take your inuendo as a compliment, as do I as a supporter.

Beck loves this, I'm sure

Beck doesn’t care if people spread this rumor, it just means he gets more attention. Beck, Coulter, Limbaugh and others of their ilk live on controversy. I wouldn’t be surprised if he sued just to have it live on. Meanwhile, real issues are going ignored or being subsumed by this kind of nonsense.

Re: Re: Beck loves this, I'm sure

of course, Olberman and Colbert don’t get commented on by conservatives or any of their comments made a controversy of because of two factors:

1) the media is overwhelmingly liberal socialists who are angry at people who have achieved anything for themselves beyond academics and other safe, liberal pursuits

2) dumb conservatives get branded as the voice of conservatism, while the rest of the conservatives who really run things and are successful are too busy to triffle with such baseless non-sense. “who have achieved anything for themselves”

While it’s true that one can work hard and advance one’s lot, do you believe it’s literally true that that person has done it “by themself”? Real question.

I find that successful people in the US often claim 100% of their success as the result of their own doing, their own bootstraps, and thus 100% should be their own share of the rewards.

I, too, am successful enough. But I am humble enough to know that my hard work, smarts, and career strategy were not enough. I needed the luck of good parents, the social service of good schools, the roads, the telecom infrastructure. I needed rule of law. I needed national defense. I needed reservoirs for freakin water to drink. I needed educated staff that I could hire to help my business progress. That shit doesn’t grow on trees, though too many people ignore the role it played in their success.

If success is 100% self-earned, then the successful might have achieved it anywhere. Good for them. I, for one, would not be as successful were I born in Botswana.

Like any good political pundit, I am going to completely ignore the documents provided for me and read into the synopsis.

I can’t believe Glenn Beck owns the trademark of “rape and murder of a young girl in 1990”. I mean, Gilbert Gottfried talked a lot about Bob Saget raping and murdering a young girl in 1990 too. I think Beck is barking up the wrong tree. He should be going after Saget to make sure he didn’t break any trademark laws.

Re: copyright

Ah. Well, that’s interesting because nothing about this story involves copyright. It involves trademark law. They’re entirely different.

It is illegal to use someone’s copyrighted material without permission regardless of whether or not it is being used in commerce.

Well, actually, I do know a bit about copyright law, and that’s not true.

But, as mentioned, this is about trademark. And in trademark, use in commerce does matter.

The only exception is Fair Use which allows some copyrighted material to be used without permission if it is being used as part of a larger article and the source is cited.

Again, you should probably brush up on copyright law yourself, because the parameters for fair use go *way* beyond what you just stated.

But, again, this is about trademark law, not copyright law, so the parameters of fair use in copyright don’t apply.

nimbleswitch (profile) says:

The only “copyrighted material” that Beck claims in his complaint is being used without his permission is his name: “Glenn Beck,” used in parody. If that’s a copyright violation simply because it’s a use of his name, then how many times per day does Beck violate other people’s “copyrighted material” on his commercially-sponsored, money-making (for him) TV show?

At least it used to be commercially sponsored. I understand that is drying up. Or maybe that’s just a rumor. But why doesn’t Beck deny it?

Yakko Warner says:

So, what now?

Not being familiar with Glenn Beck, let me see if I understand here.

This meme about Glenn Beck not denying a rape and murder is one of those “loaded questions”, like “Have you stopped beating your wife?” It implies something that’s not true, so Beck is understandably pissed off. This meme is a scummy attempt to discredit Beck.

However, the reason this meme came up in the first place, is because (I’m assuming from Masnick’s post) Beck tends to use the same technique: stating rumors and demanding a response, and implying that the lack of response is acceptance of whatever wild rumor he chooses to put forth. Thus, this scummy meme is not a random attack, but poetic justice.

Is that about right?

If so, then I think Beck needs to stop eating kittens.

These rumors about his past are wide spread! Even if you love it when he’s calls Obama a Marxist and a racist, would you leave your little girl alone in a room with him? What if the rumors are true? He’s certainly not denying them, but rather than trying to silence them with a team of lawyers. Not exactly the approach of someone that is innocent? Why won’t he face the allegations? Why won’t he take a lie detector test?

This tactic referred to in this article is taken out of context. Beck often uses it, but in the context of humor to poke fun of illegitimate news sources such as MSNBC. What if someone had opened a site with the same name and entered Obama’s name in the place of Glen Beck?

If Mr. Obama had a history of making statements about others that were false, claiming that he’d just heard such a rumor and wondering if it was true and asking for a statement denying the false statement I’d feel ’bout the same as I do about Mr. Beck in this situation.

The rhetorical tactic Mr. Beck is being subjected to is crap. Yet, Mr. Beck uses this crap tactic and gets paid money for doing it on a national stage. Mr. Beck is just getting back what he’s done to others, by someone on his own dime it seems, and showing he can’t take it.

Oh, and it there DOES seem to be a police report about a rape in the 1990’s that says a “Glenn Beck” was a suspect. So there is a valid question for certain values of “Glenn Beck”. Thus for equivalence – there would have to seem to be a valid police report about a rape listing “Barack Obama”.

But hey, thanks for asking hojo.

Aren’t blogger sites protected from invasion from people like Beck? Doesn’t the 42ND amend. allow satirists to BS? Where in the constitution does it say ANYTHING about “domain name dispute”? IT DOESN’T!!!!!!! because these are words made up by alleged lawyers of the alleged Glenn Shrek.I confirmed this on my OUIJY WHITE BOARD and it replied, “darn your smart”.

Any way, if you take the first letter of each of the following words (also known as a gramaphone): My name could be glenn beck and I want this to stop right away. This gives you MNCBGBAIWANTTSRA!!!!! Yeah, you can see where this is leading. Now, take this gramaphone and record it, play it backwards and you can hear “Paul is dead, paul is dead”. Well, there was a little girl that wasn’t raped by Glenn Beck whose name was……you got it…… PAUL. WHOAH NELLIE, I’ve proven it all! AND…. I’m told that Mr. Beck AND Paul were both alive in 1990 so Mr.B could very well have raped Paul but this cannot be proven unless Mr. B makes a confession or asks for leniency from the 1990 people.I think the residents of that state can now rest easy knowing that little Paul not only didn’t die in vain but didn’t die at all, in 1990. Now, in 1991………

discredit the messenger

This a clear example of the way you discredit someone. You state that they do this as a way of doing business and have no examples to give credit to the statement. I cut and paste from the article for reference. “This site is parody/satire. We assume Glenn Beck did not rape and murder a young girl in 1990, although we haven’t yet seen proof that he didn’t. But we think Glenn Beck definitely uses tactics like this to spread lies and misinformation.” I see his political leanings and his bias.

G.B. once wore a thong at a public beach and caused several people to vomit. He never offered to re-imburse them for their lost lunches! I’m sure they will have to pay the expenses for their years of psychotherapy for years!

I don’t think any man who teabagged his high school gym teacher should be on the radio infecting the minds of our youth with his communist blather.

So far I’ve seen no proof that Glenn Beck did not rape and murder a young girl in 1990. All I’ve seen is evidence that he it may have been possible for him to do so. The evidence.

“I was a monster,” says Beck. “I just wasn’t a good guy. I was a scumbag.” (page 3)

“I was taking drugs every day of my life since I was 16 years old,” (page 3)

“I’d buy Pope John Paul’s book and then ask myself, who would the pope tell me not to read? Well, probably Nostradamus, so I’d buy his book. It was the library of the insane,” says Beck (page 4)

Eric says:

I’m not saying that Beck really did rape and murder this girl, but I find it puzzling that he’s refused to deny the charges, and now I hear he’s trying to have the website shut down. What is he trying to hide? If Beck would just release his records – including his appointment book, phone and credit card records, and DNA evidence – this whole thing would die as quickly as that young girl he might have murdered although we’re not sure. But he’s got to release the full, notarized originals, not a smudgy photocopy or a “short version.” Beck’s silence should be troubling to all patriotic Americans who love their country and fear for its future.

harry canary says:

Well all he has to do

All glenn has to do is tell the truth. If he would just be a stand up guy and tell the truth things would work out. But he has yet to deny the charges. And he has not even given a good reason why. Why is he spending so much effort not denying these clear statements? All he has to do is prove it did not happen. But he will not, so the doubt and questions linger. We are all reasonable people and as reasonable people we should be able to expect some standard of proof from glenn that he did not do these things. But he has not been as forthcoming as we should have a right to expect.

beck- murder

I’ve watched both msnbc and fox. The difference in my opinion is that msnbc deals more with facts whereas fox it’s almost all one sided. For example Chris Matthews always has someone on with an opposing view. Pat Buchanan who’s as far right as you can go is frenquently his guest. He always has republicians on and for the most part shows respect. Rachael Maddow, like her or not she does her homework. She spoke about the republician who’s speaking out about czars, this senator introduced a bill that would end the use of czars. She then showed a video of that same republician during the bush era talking about the NEED for czars – she then pointed out the senator’s website that says he was one of the first senators to introduce the czar bill to congress. Those are FACTS and she calls them on it. Fox doesn’t go by facts, unless you wants to call becks chalkboard with arrows and circle facts. On the rare occasion that they have someone with an opposing view, the person is usually interupted so many times that they never get to answer the question – o’reiley is notorous for it.

Rhetoric, Satires, News, Information

For those who seek to laugh from dark comedy, these sorts of topics would suit. For satire, as the type Moliere lived for, these topics would suit. For those of us who want news and information that is backed up by film, fact, recordable evidence, the type of data that can stand in a court, these topic are not worth our time, and frankly, does nothing to life a person up, only to tear down. I’m not into that. Life is hard enough to get through. People of all sides could target ANYONE and make an insinuation to put the person on the defensive. Some people have too much time on their hands, and I question where their heartful intent might be.

B Daddy says:

Glenn Beck is a sick Man

This is a real interesting joke of sorts being played on the biggest liar on so-called news television. I recognize that he doesn’t claim to be a news person, but he has a lot of brain numb idiots believing that he is communicating the news. Sorry for the redundancy. However, I am somewhat confused by the lack of attention payed to Beck’s drug, alcahol, and ADD problems. I am also confused by the lack of attention payed to a racist MORMON who accused a black man (Obama) of being a racist. Hmmm, a member of a racist religion who believes people of color are inferior to white people, also beleives that the most powerful person of color in the land is racist. Why? Becuase a person (black man) whom the president knows very well was treated with disrespect by a white police officer. Have you ever noticed who Beck most often seeks out to try and detroy? People of color.

harry johnson says:

Why has glenn beck not responded in a positive way after all of these weeks since this surfaced? All he has done is hire lawyers. High priced ones. Why does he hire lawyers if he has nothing to hide? Why is he trying to force silence rather than answer these important questions? America needs answers. We will not be able to trust glenn beck (or any of his ilk, for that matter) with these doubts hanging about. All he has to do is clear the air and prove them wrong. Why will he not do it?

dkossuber (profile) says:

Did Glenn do it?

Actual words from Glenn Beck discussing how he could look Michael Moore in the eye while he kills him with his bare hands. Not only does this fit the exact definition of hate speech(look it up) it indicates to me that anyone that idolizes Glenn Beck idolizes a loser.

“Would you kill someone for that?…I’m thinking about killing Moore…I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it,…No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out. Is this wrong? I stopped wearing my What Would Jesus — band — Do, and I’ve lost all sense of right and wrong now. I used to be able to say, ‘Yeah, I’d kill Moore,’ and then I’d see the little band: What Would Jesus Do? And then I’d realize, ‘Oh, you wouldn’t kill Moore. Or at least you wouldn’t choke him to death.’ And you know, well, I’m not sure.”

Glenn Beck Raped and Murdered a Young Girl in 1990?

For the last time people, it is very unlikely that Glenn Beck Raped and Murdered a Young Girl in 1990. Just because he has never denied that he raped and murdered a young girl in 1990, does not mean that he definitely did do it. Please stop insinuating that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990.

Explainer says:

Glenn Beck Raped and Murdered a Young Girl in 1990?

Let’s get some perspective here, people! I mean, nobody thinks Glenn Beck Raped and Murdered a Young Girl in 1990. I fact, most of us think it is not true that Glenn Beck Raped and Murdered a Young Girl in 1990. I am certain that M. Beck will soon come forward to deny that Glenn Beck Raped and Murdered a Young Girl in 1990.

Empty Space (profile) says:

Glenn Beck Raped and Murdered a Young Girl in 1990.

How can anyone categorically state that Glenn Beck did not rape and murder a young girl in 1990? Unless a witness was with Glenn Beck during every second of 1990 someone stating that Glenn Beck didn’t rape and murder anyone is entirely inconclusive. I think of, OJ, Robert Blake, Phil Specter, and I’m sure other famous people who have killed. A blanket statement of innocence is as crazy and a blanket statement of guilt.

Banquo says:

"Didn't" is the wrong term.

Seeing as how an accusation has been made, and no proof to the contrary has been made, the correct headline should be “Genn Beck Probably didn’t Rape and Murder a young girl in 1990”

If you follow Becks own logic, and use his GOP membership as a guide to his moral values and the values he places on the life and/or happiness of others it’s very easy to believe that on occasion he might very well have raped and/or murdered or raped and murdered or murdered and raped some young woman in 1990. If he behaved as he does on TV and he was in a murder rape trial and I was on the jury he’d have a hard time winning me over.

So maybe you should think twice before proclaiming the innocence of someone based on information you just don’t have.

everyone on here is a stupid idiot. your probably all liberal and your probably democrats. Glenn beck is the only influential person that actually tells you whats going on in your world, but do you listen to him no. Instead you spreed rumors. So someday when you wake up and the united states is in so much debt that’s there’s no way out, and all of the values and justice of the old America is gone. Wow that was the biggest waste of time ever.. talk about non sensical. To whoever wrote this “article”.. I just have to say, You kind of people are so annoying.

You’re probablly over analyzing these 2 sentence I put, and how I spelled non sensical wrong and that maybe that stems from how I was raised or now your trying to question my level of intelligence and maybe you are even guessing my color of skin, and where I grew up, or that I’m probablly a woman…. and blah blah blah!! Get a life stop trying to act smart talk about stuff that matters or don’t talk at all (I’m sure you would be doing us all a favor by keeping your analytical justifications of ones theory, to yourself) There! I hope I wasted your time, even though its not even comparable to the time I wasted reading just the 1st sentence of this article. SHUT UP! Go analyze yourself (ha that should be interesting).. Bla bla! Bla!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I personally like Glenn Beck. I have found that the majority of the people who do not like Beck have never even watched his show and make their assumptions on him from what others have said. Alot of what he has said actually has happened even though people said he was crazy. I appreciate what he does. At least he has the balls to say what he actually believes.
