FCC Chair Trots Out Tired Telecom Trade Show Talk
from the broken-record dept
The Globalcomm telecommunications trade show is this week in Chicago, and as is apparently de rigeur at these events, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin’s been given a platform to repeat the same old lines that he’s said at similar previous events. Basically the gist is this: regulation is bad, okay, and companies — especially big telcos — shouldn’t be encumbered by any sort of rules so there’s a level playing field that encourages competition. Of course, all of this is double-speak. Martin loves regulation when it’s politically useful, his idea of a level playing field means one that’s slanted towards telcos and his idea of competition is a duopoly. He also remarked that the industry needs to deliver “more innovation” to consumers. Perhaps he should kick things off with some new thinking instead of rehashing these tired — and ultimately ineffective — ideas.

This should be from the alliteration-is-good department…
Puke all over big telco's
Break apart the large telco’s! CLEC’s rule!
FCC and the Telcos
Obviously politics play a significant part of how Martin’s political future will play out.
Just follow the money and you will see this is a big pay off to the Telco’s in exchange for their contributions and to the lobbyiest breathing down the necks of Congress.
Break apart teh big telcos, clecs rule?
Yikes, like any clec could afford to be in business without the large telcos.
Who do you know with 6 billion or so laying around to invest in fiber to the node or house?
Any clecs? Didn’t think so.
Actually
You’re right CLECS don’t have the money to invest in FTTX but the Gov is more than willing to dole out some fairly large loans at very good rates to let them do so.
– On a FTTX connection now and loving it.
Quite a few CLECs and ILECs are deploying FTTx infrastructures, it’s not just ATT and Verizon. The Government does provide low cost loans for better broadband access networks in rural areas.
If only RBOCs were deploying FTTx, there wouldn’t be as many FTTx equipment manufactures in the market.
Old
A whole year and only 6 comments? This guy must be even more boring then described.

report
Many people look to the FCC to keep smut off of their TV’s, to stop “wardrobe malfunctions,” to force the cable companies to offer a la carte programming, and regulate junk food commercials for kids.
