FCC Pushes AWS Spectrum Auction Back
The FCC has pushed back the Advanced Wireless Services spectrum auction scheduled for June until August, saying bidders need more time to prepare. This follows a significant change to the auction rules, which closed loopholes major carriers used to secure large discounts. The discounts were given to small and minority-owned businesses, which often were funded by and acting for big operators, simply buying the spectrum at a discount, then selling or leasing the licenses to the operators. Trade groups representing these companies have threatened to sue the FCC, calling the changes unfair — and it’s possible this suit could delay the auction even further.
