Media MVNOs Already Back To Cheap Voice?
We wondered last summer if the decision of the MVNO Amp’d to focus on content, and not communications was the wrong strategy, and it looks like the company may be tacitly admitting it. Apparently the carrier has attracted just 5,000 subscribers and has already shifted to pushing cheap voice service instead of all its exclusive content. It’s the same story that played out with 3G services: fast data and mobile content failed to draw people to the new service, and it wasn’t until communication was emphasized, in the form of low-cost calls, that consumers started buying in. So perhaps the idea of mobile operators as media companies remains a little premature.
