For years and years we’ve been hearing about how mobile porn is going to be a big business. Those who believe it point out that the VCR and the internet both represent markets that were driven forward by adult content — and therefore mobile content will grow in the same way. In fact, there’s an entire conference this week dedicated to the business of mobile porn. Since it’s focused on the business side, it’s not too surprising that it actually sounds fairly boring. However, most of the people at the conference have a vested interest in the business, so they’re hyping up just how big mobile porn will be. There’s just one problem. People just aren’t that interested. Sure, some people are, but what people seem to be missing is that the VCR and the internet were pushed forward by porn because it helped people view porn in the privacy of their own homes. Mobile porn is the opposite — about allowing people to view porn outside of their home, in public and on a tiny, tiny screen. So, sure, there are going to be some people who want it, but it’s still difficult to see it really being that big a market.

Should Mobile Porn Even Be Allowed?
I think that the right to free speech should never be suppressed, but I also think that there is a huge ethical question as to whether the public should even allow mobile porn. The public shouldn’t be put into a position where they have to be exposed to pornography. It has sexual harassment written all over. What people want to do at home is up to them, but do you really want to be sharing a crowded train with some guy who seems a little too into his Video iPod?
I’m not saying that porn shouldn’t be allowed onto portable video devices, only that we should think about how we implement this media.

I hate to break this to everybody, but a mobile phone or PDA leaves a little bit to be desired as a porn delivery vehicle – for some reason, other than people sending SPAM MMS messages, I don’t see it having much of a future.
Now, the real question is, why aren’t people considered about all those people with laptops and wireless connections to the Internet…. Nice wide 16″ inch screen, 32 bits of color and surround sound… Porn people may not always be so smart, but this sounds like a case of the analysts having a little less common sense than the MMS spammers.
I think our biggest problem with mobile phones is still the inconsiderate people that like to have very strange conversations on them while standing right behind you where you can hear every word. Some of those conversations are definitely pornographic in nature, maybe thats what the analysts meant…

Well, ringtones, wallpapers and games are rediculously huge industry. People dont spend money on sensible things, and when it comes to boobs and booty vs small screens, the B&B will win. Mobile porn will be something that is quite “normal” has anything else in the adult space.
If you think about it, if people wanted to view adult material on a computer, they have to go home, lock the door, or canned from their job because it was on company time.

Many people – including the author of this article – are dismissing mobile porn and pointing to “porn in public” and “tiny screens and poor quality” as reasons for their dismissal. The first argument assumes that most people only want to experience porn in their own homes; the second assumes that they want it at higher res and with higher quality sound than mobile devices provide.
Both of these assumptions are flawed.

Besides, the screens on mobile devices are getting larger and higher-res all the time and mobile network bandwidth is also increasing. The ability to supply adult content in this way will fuel demand which will drive further innovation.
Don’t discount the novelty factor! There will be plenty of people keen to download and watch porn on their mobiles just because they can – it’s new, different, and governments don’t like it. This all sounds like guaranteed success to me.
