Starbucks Might Be Brewing Up Some Downloads

from the goldfrappucino dept

Starbucks’ CEO says the company “might consider providing download facilities” for music at its stores, according to VNUnet. The story, though, based on another article from The Financial Times, isn’t clear about what those facilities might be — it could be more of the CD-burning kiosks it’s tested in the US, or it could be some sort of download service people access when they’re using WiFi inside a Starbucks store. Adding a music download service, particularly an in-store only one, would smack of “just add music” thinking. You’d have to imagine songs would be priced at the market rate, meaning Starbucks probably wouldn’t make money from them. Apple uses downloaded songs as a loss leader to sell iPods — but doing the same to sell a $3 cup of coffee doesn’t seem so smart.
