Telecom Italia Goes For WiBro

Telecom Italia says it will test WiBro systems from Samsung at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, making it the first European operator to trial the technology, and expects to offer WiBro commercially in 2007 with speeds of 20Mbps. That sounds like a pretty tall order, but given the mobile industry’s love of hype, it’s hardly surprising. TIM calls WiBro “the next step after UMTS”, which one reporter apparently took to mean it’s 4G. It’s not, of course, but hey, aren’t inflated expectations the name of the game?
