Yahoo Buys Whereonearth To Bolster Local Search

Yahoo has bought UK company Whereonearth, which makes local search technology for both wired and wireless networks. Some are pointing out the implications for serving local ads over Wi-Fi — much like Google wants to do in San Francisco. But Whereonearth also has a location-based services platform for mobile phones, too — which sounds similar to a previous Google purchase, Android. The next holy grail for search, apparently, is very tightly focused location-specific ads. But how long before there are any useful location-based services?
