This isn’t a new issue at all, but it should say something about the state of the digital music market when the NY Times feels the need to post an article complaining about all the various digital music file formats and the fact that they don’t all work together or on the same players or with the same software. The article even recommends some software products on how to strip the copy protection from some of the formats to let you move the music around.
