3G Laptops To Pre-empt WiMax?
An analyst firm says this week’s spate of deals to get 3G equipment embedded in laptops could end up making it significantly more difficult for mobile WiMax to take hold. The argument is basically that 3G will already be up and running and in wide use well before mobile WiMax arrives on the scene — which is no surprise, given that the mobile WiMax standard still isn’t finished. It would seem pretty obvious that a technology that’s already here is generally more useful than one that isn’t. Mobile WiMax is trying to hit a moving target — by the time it makes it out of the standards process and networks get going, cellular technologies (as well as other broadband wireless tech) will have evolved, too, and its supposed benefits may not be as clear cut.
