Competition Hits The Place Shifting Space

from the ooh,-choices dept

Orb Networks has had a product out for a little while that lets you watch your television over the internet or on a connected device, and now it looks like the whole space is about to heat up a bit. USA Today has a mixed, but generally positive review of Orb’s offering, noting that the technology still has some glitches. However, the Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg has a much more glowing review of Orb’s new competitor, the Slingbox from Sling Media. It’s clear that this concept (called “place shifting” to pick up on the whole “time shifting” bandwagon) is about to get a lot more attention, thanks to a bit of competition. Now, all we need is for the entertainment industry to sue one or both of these companies and they’ll get all the attention they need. Of course, such products will also make it so weak efforts like TiVoToGo will become even more useless than before. Update: Om Malik likes the Slingbox too.
