US Copyright Office Misunderstands Purpose Of Copyrights
from the uh-oh dept
It’s never a good thing when the folks in charge of something like copyrights don’t seem to actually understand the purpose of copyrights or how they work. Ed Felten looks at the recent release of the Office of the U.S. Register of Copyrights annual report, which includes something of an “editorial” on copyrights. Felten pulls out a few quotes that suggests the people writing this have misunderstood how copyrights work and how they were intended to be used. It sounds like the Copyright Office, instead of looking for a real solution that minimizes the negatives while upholding the positive aspects of copyright, is sort of begging copyright holders not to go overboard in how they enforce copyrights. That’s not leadership… that’s cowering.
