The focus of both the mobile operators and the recording industry on the ringtone market is becoming increasingly silly, as they all seem to think that the inflated prices people are paying for just snippets of music is somehow sustainable. At least some people are recognizing that the market has to change. Famed musician Thomas Dolby Robertson, who has been making news lately for his involvement with the ringtone market, is pointing out that both the recording industry and mobile operators would probably be better off recognizing that ringtones are promotional and giving them away for free. It certainly sounds like more people are recognizing that free is often quite good for markets.
