More Mobile Virus FUD

It seems a week can’t go by without more mobile virus stories warning of impending doom (doom, I tell you, doom!) coming from mobile viruses. However, the details of every one of these viruses has shown that, so far, there’s nothing to really worry about. Meanwhile the stories about these viruses always come from anti-virus companies who (oh, look at that) are trying to sell software. So, we have to take it with a grain of salt when we see reports warning that a new mobile phone virus “could go global in minutes”. The report comes without any details, other than saying it’s MMS-borne, rather than Bluetooth. That is a bigger concern, but there are no other details and the warning comes (again) from an anti-virus firm, looking to sell software. We’ll watch the story, but the industry has cried wolf too many times.
