Is RIM Uncomfortable With Its Own Success?

We predicted years ago that RIM would end up focusing more on licensing its software than continuing to be a device provider. However, in an interesting article at Canada.com, it appears that RIM still refuses to admit this is a viable strategy, even as it’s clearly providing more of their revenue. The writer of the article notes that RIM seems to be somewhat uncomfortable with what made them successful, and is scared to pigeonhole themselves in any way — so any time you try to define what it is that they’re doing, they’ll deny it and send you off looking in a different direction. That could be (as the article suggests) a marketing move, designed to throw off competitors — or, it could be a sign of a company not really sure where it wants to go itself.
