Not So Free WiFi

Guy Kewney really really dislikes paid WiFi, but (for good reason) he hates misleading free WiFi even more. Apparently, at next week’s 3GSM “free WiFi” is being advertised, but it’s extremely limited free WiFi. It turns out that everyone gets free scratch cards for 20 minutes of free WiFi, at which point you need to start paying the full going rate, which starts at 5 euros per twenty minutes. While there have been plenty of stories about wireless conferences where the WiFi doesn’t work, here’s a case where the WiFi is pretty expensive. Of course, it is 3GSM, so maybe this is their way of protesting the concept of free WiFi threatening 3G.
