EU Software Patents Delayed Or About To Be Accepted?

from the confusion... dept

The issue of software patents in the EU refuses to die. While the issue has been delayed a few times, it is apparently going to be up for a vote again soon. Of course, it’s tough to tell what’s really going on, as the press coverage on the issue isn’t entirely clear. A few sources are writing about how the issue was supposed to be voted on today, but that Poland has delayed the issue again, as they’re still not comfortable with the concept of software patents and how they could harm innovation. Of course, other reports of the situation suggest that the issue wasn’t expected to be voted on today, but is expected to be ratified next Monday. So, despite all the talk, it may turn out that Europe will have software patents after all, and we can look forward to plenty of pointless patent battles there while software innovation moves elsewhere.
