Content Or Communication?

from the information-is-a-two-way-street dept

While not trying to pick on one particular speech or announcement from one particular person, there’s this overwhelming belief among many in the mobile industry that somehow, mobile entertainment is going to be the biggest thing driving 3G services. It’s not clear why everyone says so — as all the evidence so far, has suggested anything but that would be the case. The applications that have been successful on mobile phones have been about communication, not content. People don’t buy mobile phones to be entertained, they buy them to communicate, and expecting them to rush out and buy new phones and service plans just because they’ll be able to download a one minute clip of some TV show seems to be putting a lot of faith in the belief that broadcast is still more important than user generated content, when plenty of signs suggest otherwise.
