theodp writes “Bidding starts at $1 million for 39 patents covering key facets of Internet transactions that will be auctioned off Dec. 6 by bankrupt Commerce One. IP experts said the patents could be used to challenge Web services like Microsoft’s .Net and IBM’s Websphere, in what one lawyer termed ‘patent terrorism.’ Microsoft declined to comment on whether the company was interested in bidding on the patents, as did Microsoft alum Nathan Myhrvold’s Intellectual Ventures. “
