More Mobile Hotspots… Plus Some Confusion

The St. Paul Pioneer Press has an interesting story about someone who has set up a mobile hotspot in a van. The van broadcasts out a WiFi hotspot wherever it goes, and is used to connect up random events. However, the reporter claims that the backhaul from the van is WiMAX, which is a nice thought, but would require WiMAX equipment to exist. It’s obviously some form of pre-WiMAX equipment. While it is a good example of how WiMAX could be used in a backhaul situation (where most expect it to be used for the time being), it’s not an example of WiMAX in practice. Update: Looks like it’s not the only one. Here’s a European ISP falsely claiming they have WiMAX.
